amc49 They can be there just as easily over the complicated electrical that fails the cooling system to melt the motors, people have fits with it then overheat them until they finally kill them.

Look at the fluid color, that helps. Newer one is better. Modded is worse. Look at what's left of the interior and outside of car, abuse is worse driver with no regard for maintenance too. If you can, yank pan to look for the clutch pack detritus that will be in there to show damage. Big clue. Get the right one for the right engine.

Wagon_Luv Looks like I need to either find another working 4F27E transmission, or fix mine.
The clutches are definitely shot, fluid is dark red now.
The Pick a Part yards have several of theses, but it's a crap shoot on getting a working one.
All most every 2000-2004 Focus there has no body damage.

amc49 Welcome to solenoid h-ll.

You can get solenoid codes all day long that have nothing to do with the solenoids. The only way the PCM can interpret things is 'this or that solenoid not working', but mechanical issues based on just what they are will show often as solenoid problems.

Take your particular issue as shown by description............say the direct clutch first slipped then failed. It's needed in 3 and 4. It might slip in 4 first since load is highest there, then the slip drops back to 3 as it gets in worse shape then you lose 3 all together as it dies to not lock up at all. Since needed in 4 too you probably won't get 4 at all now. Once a clutch pack begins to slip it's not long after that they pretty much fail, it's common to ruin one completely in only a couple minutes of true slipping.

All of that could easily reflect as solenoid issues as the electrical inputs would be going crazy there trying to establish normal workings that are impossible because the mechanical parts are dead.

Isn't it odd how that people think solenoids 'fix everything' and the transmissions just simply do not wear out any more? Nope, the solenoid thing just complicates it all to high heaven.

Direct clutch circuit fail due to excess wear at the driver end cover, or the 2-4 servo has broken the piston pin loose. Both issues common to this trans. Now likely worse though because drove it until the clutches burned up maybe. What chasing solenoids often does.

Wagon_Luv Thought I would ask here about my tranny issues?
Recently bought a 2002 Focus SE Wagon, with the slipping trans issue going into 4th gear.
I replaced the A and B solenoids, and it was shifting fine for a week or so.
Then one day it just started slipping going into 3rd gear?
I bought a code readers that would read all codes, and got a P0761 code, shift solenoid C stuck off.
I bought a used valve body with all the solenoids, and swapped out C today.
Now instead of just slipping into 3rd, it's flat out free revving into neutral.
Tried reading codes, and it's not giving any codes for trans.
Should I go back and swap C and E with the other used solenoids I have left?

Dumpbuster You might like to review my e.mails from the date I joined the forum. From the onset, I've shared my experiences with my quirky tranny and eagerly looked for input from others who shared my vehicle's transmission glitches. It wasn't until Mr. Loquacious tried to belittle me that the tenor of my posts change and then only with him (or her). My experience in the auto industry is considerable but my ego is healthy. I can't program a TV remote or use Bluetooth without my wife's assistance. And that impresses, who?
Ford has given my dealer the info and parts to fix my problem to my satisfaction which it has done. I hope those of you still dealing with this poor design's driveability woes get the same satisfaction I did.

You're doing it now.

I'm not saying you don't know what you're talking about, I'm not saying amc49 doesnt know what he's talking about. I'm saying this is the wrong place to be competing, and if that's all you're here for, don't bother. If you would like to use all your experience to help others on this forum that would be great

Thanks, Byron. I'll just toss my 40 years in the industry beginning as car salesman in the 60's on my way up to a senior-level exec slot for an Asian auto importer/U.S. manufacturer and, later, as a large metropolitan CPDJE dealer and try to decipher what AMC offers in his 1,098-word ramblings. That's by far the more sensible thing.

amc49 Who do I need to impress? I myself know the worth of what I do and pretty much don't care what others think. As well, my years of having to do that to get ahead in the freemarket trickledown economy thing are done. Much of that juggernaut is wildly false and anti-personal to the nth degree. I played the games called for there and quite successfully.

What I'm saying is that there are countless ways to get around the juggernaut of 'things being the way they are' if someone looks to do it.

Quirk? I'll say it again. Others have been at the dry clutch thing before and why no ATX uses dry clutches for shift consistency over varying conditions and long time periods. The information has been out there since the '50s and Ford ignored all that looking for a cheap gimmick and got bit doing it. If that is aspersion then so be it.
