shift solenoid "A"
I recently purchased a automatic 2002 ford focus and was told it had transmission issues. but when i drove the vehicle it would slip like it wasnt going into gear, but it would be random... First, second, third, and fourth. but i found out if i manually put the vehicle in first, or second it drove fine.. at that point i realized it cant be the transmission if it slips only in drive. so i shut off overdrive and it works fine now.

|ajibade||I have a similar issue with my 02 Focus Se Wagon. Can anyone assist to get a shop to sell the solenoid A to me and also steps to take to fix it. Is there anything like Clutch in an automatic transmission system?|

|Kamaaina||I agree with "Davelavallee"......."Old thread or not it just saved me a lot of money". Was driving my '03 when the trans acted like it went into neutral and then engaged again. MIL came on and I thought...."It's the kiss of death, $2000+ trans overhaul here it comes"! Bought a OBD2 scanner and it gave me a P0750 code which ended up being the shift solenoid "A". Went to Ford dealer and bought it (lucky they had it in stock). Dropped the pan, replaced the solenoid and buttoned it back up and it's been running great ever since. Best thing I every did was to buy that scanner....and like "Davelavallee" said it saved me big bucks!|

Thank you to everyone for the great information. My OBD reader was saying Solenoid A. Followed the other posters instructions and have no problems again. Most of the shops wanted 2 hours labour. I did it in about 2 hours myself. My 02 Focus has 261k kms. Still going strong. Also did the Thermostat Housing recently.

My problem has a bit different symptoms. Mine don't toss on the light.

An oil catch pan/Filter and 4 quarts of oil. and some rags.
Pull pan. 20 screws. SPLASH
Unplug temp sensor from filter. Plug sensor in new filter. (just pulls out)
Pull Down filter. Has oring squeeze is all. She comes out with a tug.
5/16 on solenoid.
Tug on solenoid. She slides out.
Oil up orings on new solenoid and pop back in.
Plug wire back in.
reinstall pan with gasket that came with filter.
Torque bolts to 60-70 inch pounds.
Dump in 3 quarts.
Check and add if necessary.
