bluefront There are several ways to do it......using the Ford security system. It's a matter of mounting a switch that grounds when you unscrew one of the mounting screws. Or you could rig a cable that pulls a switch as you remove the audio unit....or the bezel for that matter.

This new grounding switch is spliced into a door switch wiring.....the system thinks a door is being opened. If you wanted a separate system from the Ford security, you could just rig up another horn somewhere that blows when the audio switch is tripped.

I still think a system that deters the thief from touching the car is the best go......

TaylorinAlaska I'd go even further then that, put it inline with the horn in your car and make it trigger the horn when pulled too hard.

bluefront You could actually install several of these things if you wanted......the current draw is next to nothing.

I mounted it next to the audio unit. That's probably the first thing a potential thief looks at, and the thing most frequently stolen. When I upgrade this stock system, I'll probably do my cable trick.

You screw a cable to the rear of the unit. And you feed the cable behind the dash as you're doing the install. Be sure you go behind some heavy metal piece. Then you find somewhere around your feet to bolt down the other end of the cable. If anyone tries to steal the unit, he can remove the screws, but thing won't come out.......not unless he knows where the other end of the cable (which he can't see) is fastened.

Another cheap security mod.....

TaylorinAlaska Its just one of those things that may or may not help. I like it, its suttle for being so helpful. I'd mount it in the dash up by the windsheild, so they'll see it before they even touch the car.

Ohh btw I've seen a Benz I think it was that had one on the rear view mirror. I thought that was pretty cool, nice and noticeable. Though if someone was at the door, they wouldn't see it...

INCUBUSRATM I think it's a great idea. I totally understand what you mean, bluefront. If they see the blinking light, they'll skip your car and move on to the next that doesn't have the blinking light. Great write-up, as always.

bluefront No matter what sort of security system you have, a thief can break in. He may not be able to start the car, or anything else......but can inflict a lot of damage.

This simple mod, which can be installed on virtually any car even with no other security system, gives the thief the impression your car is protected. And if nothing else valuable is visible in the interior......he might just break into the car down the street that shows no sign of a security system.

That's the best you can hope for.......
