In 2 hours, this car is going into the Ford dealer. (shudder)
I've never owned a car that I've taken to a mechanic, nevermind a bloody DEALER. But I've got no more time to spend with this problem.

Once I hear back from the dealer, I will post ALL the results here, as someone with a similar problem may stumble upon this thread in the future. Thanks to all who gave suggestions, I'll let you know.
What was the final outcome with the ford dealer?
I've got the same problem and the new coil didn't fix it nor the repair of the connector plug. Your solution would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Bill

sirfartsalot2 I have a 06 with just over 75k i have had this issue many times and can usually get away with just replacing the coil... I got tired of spending 100 bucks on something that lasted a week maybe at the most. I figured it was because it was flash tuned but found that people with the stock cars (i mean stock, not even a air filter) have this issue. THANK YOU TO All of you that shared the wiring prob on the side of the head. I am going to look into this and hopefully it will help me out.. FF to the rescue!!

Arty I have spare connector and wire pigtail after my successful repairs. Anyone need coil or MAS connector harness?

Arty Final report. Wires melted and grounded short to cause coil pack overheating and burn out. Working with the harness broke more wires and found corroded connections.

Final solution: went to local salvage yard, called Pull-A-Part. Cut part of the harness from a 2001 Focus with coil and MAS connectors attached and was used to connect wiring and by pass burned sections. Problem solved. Up and running great. This was beyond me so a local garage put it all together with my offer of a section of the harness.

Check for burned wiring. Pull a section of harness from junk Focus at a salvage yard and splice it in. This worked for me. Problem solved

Arty We have the same issue. Still have not found the fault though.

Smithr3375 Thank you..... You saved us lots of time and money. We had the same EGR issue with the wires.

EtownMike Car Runs fine for 125 miles so far. I insulated the hot pipe on the side of the head that the wires shorted on.
IF YOUR CAR DIES AND YOU SMELL SULFUR. CHECK SPARK ON ALL CYL.
IF NO SPARK TO SOME CYL. REPLACE COIL PACK AND CHECK WIRE HARNESS ON DRIVES SIDE FOR MELTED WIRE CASINGS ON HOT METAL PIPE ON DRIVERS SIDE OF HEAD. FACTORY INSULATION GOES BAD.
I hope this helps somebody. I was going crazy burning up coils. Still cheaper that a cheap mechanic.
Good Luck Y'all

EtownMike My 2001 ZTS has 150,000 miles on it and have similar symptoms. It keeps burning the coil pack. 3 as of today. I put a new one on and it runs fine for 1 to 5 minutes and sputers and dies and will not start again. Followed by the smell of SULFER. I just noticed the wiring harness was melting on a EGR pipe that runs along the side of the head on the drivers side. i will fix the burnt wires tonight and get a new coil tomorrow. cross your fingers. I'm hoping it doesnt burn up the 4th coil.

My 2000 Focus with Zetec exhibited similar symptoms this afternoon. Acted like it was running on 2 cylinders. Did it twice for a few seconds about 30 seconds apart when stopping at stop signs in a residential area. MIL did not come on, but scan tool showed P0351 when connected later.

What's the most likely failure mode when this code is logged?

BTW: 60k miles and about 7 years old.

TIA

Never mind. Broken wire at coil connector.

Thanks, Mike
