I recently changed out the transmission fluid in my MTX-75 for Ford XT-M5-QS fluid. The dealership didn't even know what this stuff was and had to order it. This is a hillbilly town though. If it isn't a truck or V8 they don't know anything.
The transmission with it's new fluid and Poly lower mount, shifts 100% better.
You could use anything in the transmission. Cooking oil if you wanted to. But what is the "best" for you, isn't always the "best" for someone else.
My daily beater doesn't take the beating like a drag or Auto X car does.

|1lowfocus05||I work for Ford and according to our maintenance schedule it should be every 50000. I always suggest doing it every year and if you are doing a lot of track driving I do mine 2 times a year. You cant hurt the car by doing it to often its going to long that you really need to worry about.|

|SBK86||I did this a couple weeks ago with royal purple when I did my regular oil change. It took about 15 minutes. Shifting feels a little smoother.. but it could all be in my head. Still glad I did it since the car is just shy of 100k.|

First of all, the slang term "gear oil" is often confused with conventional 75W-90 or similar gear lubricant which is GL-5 certified for use in certain older manual transmissions and hypoid gear differntials. That heavy duty stuff will work fine in a 60's muscle car or the differential of a new 5 liter Mustang, but it will literally eat and destroy yellow brass synchro rings and other parts found in any modern manual transmission built since about 1975. It has the wrong additives for a modern manual transmission. Gas mileage will suffer, the transmssion will feel baulky upon shifting and it will likely fail.
Are you aware that automatic transmissions have gears inside?
Ford SVT service documentation instructs SVT Focus owners to put Mercon V into their manual transmission based upon Getrag Engineering recommendation. Many manual transmissions designed in the 80's until about 5 yrs ago were specifically optimized for running ATF. Getrag's whole manual transmission product line used ATF until the late '90's when they started the switch to mfr-specific manual transmission lube for the M3 Getrag 6spd and some other's. You shouldn't just arbitrarily substitute a gear lube assuming it will be better than what the OEM specified. This is what foolish Toyota Supra owners did in the 90's. Those Getrag 6spds that were built for Dextron quickly failed on redline manual transmission fluid. Owner's manuals describe what lubricants to use. Mercon V is not just for automatic transmissions. It's used for power steering systems too.

I use Royal Purple 75-90 Max Gear oil not the synchromesh,
All the Mini cooper S guys who also have the getrag 6 are using Redline 75-85 MTL gear oil

If I were going by the book, I'd use Mercon V ATF. If I wanted a bit more performance, I'd go with Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF. If I wanted even more performance, but with higher cost, I'd use the Royal Purple Sychromesh. (I believe that's what the previous owner of my car used when he drained/filled it 20k miles ago.)

Who told you that?
Well if it was eating up and chewing gear material , wouldn't it be seen at gearcase oil change intervals? At 168,000+ miles I have seen nothing. And believe me when I say I look for the crud in my drainages.
