After programming my new fobs (post #41), I went to Ace and had them cut the two new keys ($2 each). I did a little research before trying to program my keys because you can mess this up and end up with a PATS lockout. One thing I found was that there is Ford documentation that mentions a 10-minute time frame, so to be on the safe side, I waited 10 minutes before programming the second key and also 10 minutes before trying to start the car with them. Some procedures say to wait 1 minute and others don’t even mention a wait time. My owner’s manual has multiple errors in it for doing this procedure just like it has errors for programming fobs. The procedure below worked for me and now I have 4 working keys and 4 working fobs. Keep in mind that I am doing this on a 2004 model.
Note: You MUST have two original programed keys to perform this procedure.
1. Insert an existing (working) key into the ignition cylinder.
2. Turn the ignition cylinder to ON (RUN, the third key position) for at least ONE SECOND (but no more than TEN seconds) and back to OFF. Remove the first key.
3. Insert a second working key and turn it to ON (RUN) for at least ONE SECOND (but no more than TEN seconds) and back to OFF. Remove the second key.
4. Insert the new key before TWENTY seconds have elapsed and turn it to ON (RUN). Leave it in the ON position for at least ONE SECOND and turn back to OFF.
5. The security light (center of dash) will light up for THREE seconds to indicate that the new key has been successfully programmed.
6. To program additional keys, repeat steps 1 through 5 (wait at least 10 minutes before programming additional keys).
As a precautionary measure, you should wait at least ten minutes before you try to start your vehicle.
A maximum of eight keys can be coded to your vehicle.

|radji||I don't know how I did it, but I got it into programming mode. However I was only able to get one of the remotes programmed before it exited. I do have to hold down the button on the remotes for several second for it to program. Still not sure how I did it. I am cycling from off to on 4 times, stopping for a few seconds just before the last time.|

After you hear the chime, push one button on ALL of your remotes (up to 4) one at a time. It is not necessary to hold the fob button down or pause between each fob, just do each one quick enough so as to not have the system time out on you. You should hear a chirp as each of your fobs is entered.
If the car is not responding with a chirp as each fob is pressed, then I'm not sure what is going on. Are your existing fobs working? Try just programming them in without the new fob(s) and see if you get a chirp.
FYI... Our owner's manuals say to cycle the key between position 2 and 3 to enter programming. Position 2 is ACC. The manual should say cycle between positions 1 (OFF) and 3 (RUN). It appears that you have already figured that out because you are getting the programming chime.

|radji||I am having trouble with the programming on my 2002 Focus. I can't get it into programming mode. I will cycle the key 4 times and on the 4th time, I do hear a chime when I switch to off, but the remotes don't program in. I am not sure what I am doing wrong...|

I used the procedure above, but I think it would help to clarify it a little if a couple of things were added.
Sit in car with doors closed and seat belt buckled so that the seat belt chimes don't add any confusion to the mix.
Also, at the end of step #1, pause with key in Run for a couple of seconds before proceeding to step #2.
Now to proceed with getting my keys cut and programmed. Fingers crossed there!

Thank you for your advice. Option 1 is £85 so im searching for a locksmith. Option 2, over here i havent found anyone yet who can clone the ID outside of the car dealership, they can only cut a new key. Since i've discovered that my car is only worth £300 it makes it difficult for me to justify £85 right now, so close to Christmas. If it ends up being my only option though then obviously its better than being locked out of the car!
Still looking though, in other forums there are car dealerships complaining about the ridiculous charges and stating that they dont do that, so im searching for these guys to go to!

Key Fob Programming How-To
The reason to have a third key is so that if you lose one, you can add another third key without going to the dealer.
If you have only one key you have two choices:
-go to the dealer or a locksmith that can add a new master key
-option two, get your one key cloned (locksmith reads the ID on your one key and then configures your new key to use the same ID).
Option 2 is cheaper, but you have only one master key and a clone. You cannot use these two keys to add a new master.

I was afraid you'd say that.
Yeah i heard that before that the two original keys were needed to code a third. Its a bit dumb though coz why would anyone need a third? Surely the only reason to buy another key is because you only have the one?
Anyway. No worries, thanks for the advice. Ill have another hunt for the missing key, even though we've moved house three times since we lat saw it!

There are separate instructions for adding a third key, but the owner can't do it with only ONE existing key programmed into the car's computer.
Two are required to prove you own it, so someone can't make a copy that works from a loaned key.
That's not the protection it was now that keys can be "cloned", but that was the intent.
