FreeFocus If anyone still has questions that Sailor beat me to you can check out this thread about halfway down is where the discussion of LED and Cruise control work on the same circuit. Or if just a brake light is out, which happened to some of you.

The hatch is infamous for breaking the wires because of the bending and opening/closing.

Good too see some new guys pop up here, hopefully we can help you out more, if you need it.

boborc Oh checked wires and they looked good

boborc Had same systems, brake lights staying on while in gear but no third light, although 2 side brake lights worked while in park. All 5 bulbs burned out in 3rd light. Replaced them with 2825 bulbs and everything works fine

owlcore Had a look at the body to hatch wiring, and sure enough several cracked wires with exposed copper! Patched it up and replaced the bulbs in the 3rd brake light and everything is working again! The bulb holder and reflector for the 3rd brake light were a little deformed from the heat, but it went back together and you can't tell once it's installed in the car.

owlcore I googled my problem with my 02 ZX5 and this thread was one of the first hits! This perfectly describes my symptoms, even the cruise control! So glad I found this before I shelled out cash on a brake light switch! I'll tear into the car tomorrow when it's light out and hopefully fix it.

hooligan998 SUCCESS!!! Turns out the aftermarket LED highmount unit I installed was the culprit. There was not enough resistance in the LED unit therefore whichever module monitors this circuit thought all the bulbs were blown. I installed a 6 ohm 50 watt load resistor to simulate a proper load across the LED unit. It is wired in parallel. You can do a search and find out how to do it. I ordered the resistor from HERE. But you can probably find them cheaper elsewhere because that site will charge crazy shipping. I only ordered it from them because I also ordered an HID kit for my motorcycle.

I am so relieved to have finally figured this out. But I'm banging my head on the wall because I should have known this from the start.
