On my 2009, the three screws to remove the fan were accessible. Nothing else to remove beforehand.
But to get to the bottom bearing, I had a bit of a hard time removing the bottom cover, which has wires attached to the plug, which is part of the bottom cover. So it's easier to drill a hole in the middle of the round part on the cover, lube the bearing, then cover with black electrical tape.

Here. I made this just now specifically because I saw your post.
This is for the 2001 Ford Focus ZX3 model though. I'm unsure if the 2000 version is any different.

|Joelnaf||Very common for it to do this at low speeds or when breaking turning etc.... just remove the fan like shown above then blow it out with a compressor. Oil up the two copper bearings top and bottom of the fan shaft. Sound will go away.|

|josephd||My fan does the same thing. It does it when in motion, and sitting still. When it gets cold, the low speed(#1)makes noise. If I put it on the second speed it goes away.|

Much appreciated, because I thought I might be doing something wrong (it felt too difficult to be the correct way)
p.s If I dive upside down I then have to repair passenger’s seat afterwards . then to another thread and the story goes on

I reached up from underneath, primarily by "feel" 'cause I didn't feel like diving upside down under the dash if I didn't have to!
Used a torx bit in a 1/4" socket at the end of a 6" extension (1/4" drive). Handle to break loose, fingers on extension to run in & out.....
Worked fairly easily that way. Do the back one first (hardest to get at), since the others will hold the fan in place while you get the hard one out. put it in last on re-assembly....

i just want to ask one thing? How on earth did you all manage to squeeze your hand to remove those 3 screws (torx type they are, at least in my focus ii (late 2008 model)
I try using a flexible extension fitted with a torx end with an electric screwdriver but yet again I can’t even see the 2 out of 3 screws yet alone to even consider removing them . (I feel that if I try that –in blind- by feeling with the edge of my fingers most probably the screws should be lost inside the engine’s abyss). i also have Haynes manual to help me but …
