steering locks while driving

I am new in here, my name is victoria, from so. california,
and I was just wondering if this has happend to anybody else with their
ford focus in feb 14 05 my steering wheel locked while I was driving
my car and this wasn't the first time. It happend again on june 6 05 and it has happend to me again october 5 05. causing me to crash all 3 times with damage ranging from $3,000--$4,700.
and $1,500 worth of insurance deductables I did file a complaint w/ ford manufacture and consumer affairs, all they were able to do was, allow my insurance company to subrogate ford for the damages that have occured w/ the car. Does ne1 have any suggestions on what I can do or how take this matter up to the next leval.. I need so help and Im looking for some advice from other member's in this site. All suggestions and feedback will be greatly appreciated. Thank you for taking your time out to read my story and I wish you all a good day..Thanks again

TheAnswerMVP2001 Ah man I thought this just happened to me. I was coming home, pulled into my drive way and the key would not come out. I wiggled and turned and almost broke it off I was soo ticked off. So I get on the board here and see whats up, and find out stuck keys is common and leads to replacing ignitions! Great!! So I went back out and turned the wheel like some said...still nothing, then I happen to glace down at the shifter and see my car is still in drive!! DUH, thats why it wouldn't come out. I had put my parking brake on first and left the car in Drive which is why the key wouldn't come out...whew that was a relief. I just hope I didn't screw anything up twisting that key around..*knocks on wood*.

Focusedat50 Mine had nothing to do with the key cylinder at all, they replaced the shifter and that fixed it for me ............must be talking about two different problems. Good luck.

Kornography6 Yeah, it is quite popular of a problem... I just had mine done too, the locksmith had to drill the entire cylender out because the tumblers were stuck causing the key NOT to turn. He said that even he, (a locksmith specializing in autos & safes) sees a lot of these on the Foci. The dealer said there wasn't a recall, but they see a lot as well. The locksmith Replaced the cylender for $150.00. I figured it was better than your $357.00 at the dealer. The worst part was, it happened while I was at my second job, Delivering pizzas for Dominhoe's. Any Idea where I can get into that Class Action Suit?

bushy1 Apparently the problem is in the switch itself I just had mine replaced at the dealer for $357.00. Had to drill it out and replace then locksmith to rekey to my keys. Dealer told my wife that he does 3 to 4 a month and this a small dealer! Filed a compaint with Center for Auto Safety, informed that there is a class action suit against FORD for this problem because it is a very common problem.

Focusedat50 Micro......my car is atx. The way it was explained to me by the Ford tech was there is a module in the shifter that tells a module in the steering column that the car is in park and it's ok to release the key. The shifter was my problem, bad module I guess, once they replaced the entire shifter assembly it worked fine. Resetting the ECU didn't fix it and turns out it had nothing to do with the ingition tumbler or the key.

A slight PITA but at least it was covered under warranty.

S2 Another thing I remember doing when my key stuck was pulling the steering wheel to the left or right (I pulled it to the left) and then while holding it tight, turn the key. Not sure if the car moved slightly when I was parked and put some tension on the steering column, anyway, I know that worked.

microtonal Focusedat50, is your car a manual or auto tranny ?
Just wondering since they said the car/ECU doesn't know it's in 'park.'

Also, resetting the ECU won't release the key either ?
