I had to remove my blower to clean out the leaves too. They were causing my fan to vibrate because it was out of balance. The "placeholder" only filters out things bigger than basketballs! My nearby Autozone didn't have the filter in stock, so I covered the filter "placeholder" with some window screen that I had on hand...just cut it to size and sealed the edges with some silicone. It has been fine since then.

joecicalese I bought one assuming it would be a replacement for the old one. Got in there and saw there wasn't one in there. Assumed I got cheaped out by the previous owner. Couldn't figure out how to get the little plastic retainer back on top of the filter.

Realized it was a placeholder for the filter, and pitched it as hard as I could.

bluefront '05-'07 models don't come with one, and have no way to install a cabin filter without mods. The one you can buy won't fit no matter what you do.

Lolly Oh yeah it does. They all have a spot for one, but more than likely don't have one installed.

mikebontoft I wonder if the mech pulled it out again, because there were a ton of tiny leaves one day after they all landed on my car, and they all blow through the vents into my nice clean interior :P

if you have a screwdriver and can read you can change it yourself. 2000-2004 instructions can be found at

make sure that you put the wipers in the UP position or you will break the cowl retainers when removing (lesson learned first hand).

if you are paying $30 for the service at the dealer that is actually not a bad deal. the filters cost the dealers about $12 each. you might get for about $25 if you negotiate a bit.

if you plan to install yourself you can buy them elsewhere for cheaper. the OE manufacturer of the filter for the 00-04 foci is MicronAir so if you can find one of them you are getting a top quality filter. i have seen them on eBay before for less than auto parts stores.
