The 2.3L motor has counter rotating balance shafts that are attached to the bottom of the block, kind of submerged in the oil pan and is run off a gear on the crankshaft. They act as a dampening device, removing any unwanted vibrations that may be felt by the driver inside the cabin of the car.
The benefits are that you would be removing over 20lbs of wieght from your car, and I think it was about 12lbs of rotating mass, causing parasitic drag on the motor. Your car would rev much easier both up and down. There is some hp/trq increases, some say about 5 each, but I think realistically maybe a 2-3 increase in hp & trq.
Warranty, well I would think if something was wrong with your car that warranted a tech to remove your oil pan and noticed the balance shafts gone. I think it would be pretty safe to say that your warranty would be null and void. I mean its not like bolting on a CAI or exhaust, your kind of messing around with the internals, & I don't think Ford would take kindly to that.

|warneej||yeah...i was thinking of doin it your way too and i'm glad i didn't...its not just a flat metal strip that comes with the kit, that strip has an oil plug with o-rings built into it to block the oil galley...there is no way to fabricate this yourself for less than $20 and it definately won't be as reliable..just get the kit, it comes with pretty good directions too!|

|Spooky03||Also the engine block is made of aluminum. So if you use the wrong thread pitch you risk stripping the threads in the block. $20 is not that much and eliminates any headaches of gathering all the needed parts and fabricating the metal peice that holds the oil plug in place. No its not hard to do if you're mechanically inclined and have the resorces. And to answer your question "will they already know maybe?" I'm gonna say NO....|

|strung||if you homade kit fails you wont have sufficient oil supply to the rest of your motor.....do the math from there.|

|zekester||You really need to look closely at the Marcy & Cosworth BS delete kits before preceding any further. As "strung" stated its not the bolt that is the main part of those kits, but the plates that are engineered to do the job correctly...|

|ttvines||Yeah, you can do it. You just need the right type and size of bolt. It will save you money. I made my own intake and it works great.|

|strung||uhhh...thats not the way it works bro. the screw doesnt block the oil outlet for the balance shaft. you need somthing to plug the oil feed and the screw holds it there. dont do it. use cosworths or marcys kit....trust me.|
