pulled the timing cover found it off 0.25"
put it back one tooth and that makes it 0.25" the other way.
one way it runs smoother but the rpms are jumping up and down a few 100
the other way it stays fairly steady but its all most like its missing, revs better at higher rpms.
i thought timing marks are meant to line up????
any ideas? other then the Z one....

well got the pan/head back on, compression tested it was all 150/180, started up.
seems to stumble at low rpms, better as revs go up.
my INNOVA 3140 scan tool "not the dash trick" shows no codes.
to much difference in comps piston to piston making it shake a little?
think ill try and run it 15 min or so, see if it puts a code out after it heats up.

I'd bet a million bucks there is nothing off with that rocker position at all, more likely the new valve seat put in too low, probably not a new head. Rocker stands are generally machined all at once. VERY odd for one to be off like that.
You can collapse a hydraulic lifter with a simple c-clamp. You ALWAYS collapse lifters going into an unknown quantity new rebuild, good way to bend some valves.

got a hold of them..
they said take the HYD a-juster out and put in a vice, to remove oil presser.
i did this and the valve is now closed.
ill see about some photos.
they said im one of 3 people that this happened to.
after that they figured it out and started fixing the issue before shipping the head...
talk about drawing the the short straw.....

OK the fun goes on,.......
got the shims put them in and....oh what a big suprize...valve still open "a LOT"
need more shims..or.????
do i need to put the head on the block for the HYD lifters to release or shrink after it cranks over with oil presser.?
also since ive got the pistons out i ordered rings from rockauto.com
they sent me rings for one piston.. ARG
im going to be very happy when this thing is GONE, LONG GONE

You got to post a picture of those shims when you get them. I can't picture where they will put them. And why just #4?
I don't know why they don't install cam seals before they ship. Maybe something to do with liability/damage when installing the cam sprocket. There should have been literature instructing you to install one.
Something else amiss because they should have caught the rocker/tappet gap before shipping. Chiltons says the collapsed lifter gap should be 0.000 to 0.177 inches. Shipped, the lifters are collapsed since they haven't been pumped up yet by oil pressure.

Too bad you got stuck with extra work, not really a "foreseeable" issue in the normal course of things....

yea i want this thing gone...
are old 76 flat bed needs head work, and this is holding up that...
ive got a line of something like 6 autos out side the door.
needing every thing under the sun, from head work to trans work to fuel system work to import JDM trans plants...ECT ECT

no no i could have fixed it with out pulling the head..
i thought it was the block and/or rings and went after it accordingly...
