There is also some bad advice in here... you should not just "let the oil burn away". Letting it burn away will do two bad things.. it will deep-fry the tips of your boots, and it will leave a residue that will fall into the cylinders the next time you change the plugs (also make plug removal harder).
It is easy to remove the bulk of the oil with long Q-tips and/or a rag end poked in with a long thin shim or stick. Another way is with the head cover off, a shop-vac partially eclipsing the hole (over the plug) and a compressed air wand blowing into the space left open alongside the plug/vac tube.

Fah - circular pattern from the center out is all you need for that, and hand tight WITHOUT reefing on them when they bottom out.
More end up breaking ones trying to torque them, and few have the inch pound wrench required.
P.S. - doing it in stages is the most important part, not trying to tighten them all the way in order.

I know this an old thread, but Milton what specific book is your "2007 Focus Workbook". I would like to get a copy for my 2005 ZX4.
The Haynes manual I bought does not show the torque sequence for the Duratec valve cover and kinda sucks in other areas too. I think they are trying to cover to many different model years 2000 - 2011, which covers several different engines.

|GreenPanther||Thanks, Milton! That is just what I was looking for. I have everything off now. I am just getting the cover cleaned up and ready to paint. I will probably put it all back together tomorrow when the paint on the valve cover is dried.|

I just got back home and am just about ready to tear into this.
I am still wondering where I can find the torque specs for the valve cover bolts?
My Hanes manual lists 60 in- lbs for the Zetec, and 80 in-lbs for the SPI.
It does not list anything for the 2.0 Duratec??

Don't worry about removing the oil from the spark plug holes. It'll burn off quickly.
Just replace valve cover gasket and make sure everything is clean and smooth.
Get 3 or 4 cans of brake kleen and spray everything down good. Don't use a rag to wipe the surfaces. Just spray clean

Oil in spark plug hole
I went to change the spark plugs on my 2007 focus last week and noticed the plug holes were filled with oil. After my initial panic and a search on here I realized that I just need to replace the valve cover gasket. I still have a few questions though.
1: What is the best way to get all the oil out of the hole before I remove the spark plugs?
2: With the spark plug boot sitting in oil, will I also need to replace those now?
3: What are the specs for how much I need to torque the bolts down to when I install the new gaskets?
I already have the new gaskets and will be putting them on this weekend, just looking for any tips to make it go as smoothly as possible.
I don't want to see this anymore.............
And this cylinder, the plug was completely submerged.
