3rd time lucky
hoooorah! car came back from another stint at the garage today and after putting back on the diagnostics it came up with a misfire on cylinder 2. it was tracked down to the new coil pack that turns out to be faulty. weather i was just v unlucky with the one i bought or there is something else knocking the coil out we will have to wait and see.
all the leads and plugs have also been replaced as advised so fingers crossed it will be ok.

put car into local diagnostics centre which came up with no fault codes. upon further investigation they found that no's 1 and 4 spark plugs were arching. all 4 replaced and all was well.......... until this morning when started up having not used it all weekend back to bad running although it now idles perfectly. the problem seems to be when its under load, if you feather the throttle its fine, as soon as you give it too much throttle it hesitates and judders. also engine light was flashing and then gone out again!! dont cars do your head in?
would agree with your unmetered air solution so if problem re-accures with idling that will be my first port of call.

steve when driving normally do the revs appear to "hang" or take time to return to normal idle (around 850rpm) when clutch is depressed and also coming to a full stop?
In any case it sounds like an "unmetered air" problem. Check your PCV hose (behind intake manifold on 1.6) isn't collapsing. Also check the pipe to your purge/charcoal cannister (long black plastic pipe running across the top and rear of your engine cover from under your throttle body to the cannister on the drivers side firewall).
Heres a code reader/reset tool I invested in. Saves paying a garage £50 just to check a code. Obviously wont be as accurate as the Snap Ons etc for pin pointing fault but for DIY its great. Example is from Amazon but shop around ebay and there cheap as chips!

Not so great
started fine this morning but when stopped and restarted again same problem back again. have replaced ht leads to no avail. think gonna have to get it put on diagnostics reader. also took off idle control valve to clean but it looked quite clean anyway. does anybody think that is worth changing before i get diagnostics done?

drove the car yesterday still with the warning light on and after leaving overnight and starting this morning it is running perfect and the warning light has gone out. not sure how this has come about but the car has been started and stopped quite a few times already today and so far so good. will keep fingers crossed.
was wondering weather the coil pack threw the ecu when it went and it maybe re adjusted when the new one fitted???

Steveplatt, if you hold in the odometer reset button while starting the car it will go into "test mode" and this will display current DTCs, among other things. That's the gist of it, but you can search for more info here, google, youtube. I think you should make sure your wires and plugs are up to snuff also, you could have high resistance in a wire that klled the previous coil, the new one might handle it for awhile but will kill the new one too if this is the case.
ErikJames, you should look around here for info on the Idle Air Control valve (or IAC), it's a solenoid responsible for maintaining off throttle engine idle, and they are known to stick and cause problems like you're describing. They can be cleaned or replaced, if you want to replace it I've used a Hitachi one in the past that was about $60 and works fine, much cheaper than OEM. Search for "IAC cleaning how to" or something to that effect, it's an informative thread.

|ErikJames04SVT||I am having a similar issue with my 04' SVTF. Sometimes the things acts like the cruise control is on. I start it and it jumps up to 2500 or 3k rpms. othertimes it just idles a little high 1500rpms but there is no check engine light and its not throwing any codes. Keep updating this thread with what you find and i'll do the same if i find something.|
