JFrye The shell I'm picking up is literally just that. Im getting it from another member on here. It is a stripped down shell, and i mean stripped down. So, I can honestly go whatever route I would like to, but I prefer to stick with the Zetec.

sleepyboy I know you said zetec which I'm all for, but you could use a duratec 2.3 from a ranger, it already has the tranny and everything and they are plentiful. Then again having as zetec powered car already would just mean a tranny swap beside the rear end fab work that needs to be done.

JFrye My biggest concerns are going to be 1) will the subframe bolt in fairly easily, 2) I'm going to need a rear end that can hold up to abuse.

I would prefer IRS, but if they can't hold up to abuse, then I will try to come up with solid axle ideas.

Turbo Turtle if you want irs you could use a mazda mx5 or a rx7 rear end. solid axle just use a 8.8

JFrye I was thinking Mazda 6 and typed Mazda 3, prolly bc i had a Mazda 3 in the shop yesterday. Damn brain fart. So, now that my confusion is hopefully out of the way on that, will the Mazda 6 rear subframe bolt up?

swansong Mazda3 never came in AWD.

JFrye Bringing up my old thread seeing as I will be getting a shell tomorrow. I've managed to get the motor, bellhousing and transmission information I needed. Now I'm looking into rear ends. I know the mazda 3 uses the same rear subframe for the FWD cars as the focus uses. I wouldn't think that they would change the body or anything between a fwd and awd Mazda, or am I wrong here? So I'm curious if anyone knows, will the awe Mazda rear subframe bolt right into the focus?

ZXthrizzle05 ive allways contemplated converting to RWD

JFrye Thanks for the advice so far. As for the build, I'm on a budget, so it will be a drawn out process, so unfortunately Turbo Turtle, I don't have funds to buy a rolling chassis. As much as I would love to, I'm not able to. I was able to find the bellhousing needed on for around $400.

I've also been told that the rear subframe from a early 90's model Thunderbird or mustang are close the same dimensions I would need to run independent rear suspension. I was thinking that some of the Mazda 3's are awd and that might work as well. Anyone care to share some of your thoughts on this?

mikebontoft ^^ definitely worth it.... its a damn nice setup.

edit: looks like they disappeared from that link there.....

I know of another site with all the stuff along with water line routing and whatnot. I will see if I can dig it up and help. I thought about doing this too. MIGHT still do the zetec if all else fails (13B)
