It really sucks when you're hours from home and it starts doing it.
But I'd definitely get that pump and filter replaced asap, or it's just going to quit on you all together.

STALLING, ENGINE HESITATION, LOSS OF POWER, SURGING, AND OTHER SIMILAR SYMPTOMS AS A RESULT OF CONTAMINATION OF THE FUEL PUMP FILTERS. EXTENDED COVERAGE PROGRAM 03N01. SUPPLEMENT #1. FUEL DELIVERY MODULE - NEW DESIGN. *TT SUPPLEMEN
7 of 13: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE
Recall Number: 03V482000
Dates Manufactured: MAY 1999 to JUN 2001
Number of Vehicles Affected: 671000
Date Owners Notified On: JAN 2004
ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES, CONTAMINATION OF THE FILTER IN THE FUEL DELIVERY MODULE (FDM) CAN REDUCE, AND EVENTUALLY BLOCK, THE FLOW OF FUEL TO THE ENGINE.
Consequence of Defect:
THIS MAY CAUSE ENGINE HESITATION, LOSS OF POWER, SURGING, AND OTHER SIMILAR SYMPTOMS. OVER TIME, THE FILTER MAY BECOME SUFFICIENTLY BLOCKED TO CAUSE THE ENGINE TO STALL, WHICH COULD RESULT IN A CRASH.
THIS ACTION IS DEEMED A SAFETY IMPROVEMENT CAMPAIGN AND IS NOT BEING CONDUCTED UNDER THE SAFETY ACT. ALL OWNERS WILL BE NOTIFIED OF THE PROBLEM, AND DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE FDM WITH A NEW DESIGN AT NO CHARGE IF THE OWNER REPORTS THAT THE VEHICLE EXHIBITS ANY OF THE IDENTIFIED SYMPTOMS. THE FREE REPLACEMENT WILL BE AVAILABLE FOR A PERIOD OF 10 YEARS FOLLOWING THE ORIGINAL PURCHASE OF THE VEHICLE, WITH NO MILEAGE LIMIT. OWNER NOTIFICATION IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING NOVEMBER 2003. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT FORD AT 1-800-392-3673.

|sleepyboy||I'd upgrade the whole assembly to the newer style.|

|TerryB||You probably want to do a new pump while you're at it. That's my plan anyway.|

Thanks for the write up. Appears to be basically the same as making my access panel for my firebird.
So if I clean out my tank and strainer on fuel pump that should solve my problem?
I'll probably do it when I'm low on fuel to make it easier plus less wasted fuel then.

Well, it's a well known problem with the early Focus. There was repair offered through Ford for 10 years. I've also read that the ethanol mix in the ethanol fuel cleans all the crud in the fuel tank and it has to go somewhere. I never had mine replaced. So I have to drop the tank or cut an access hole in my floor.
