I bought my car 300 miles from home, but my local dealer (5 min drive) has a fantastic service department. You'll know you have a good service department a lot of the time by getting a service writer's business card and just chatting with them about potential issues. If they are friendly and actually take time to listen to your concerns, and have numerous ways to contact them on their card, you're likely to have a dealership that cares about getting the job done right.
Also read reviews like Angie's list and whatever you can find on Google. Negative reviews are likely to be more prevalent than positives, but the one with the least negatives/most positives is likely the one you want to go to, adjusted for dealership size, of course. Smaller dealerships that are family owned and not part of a huge chain like Dobbs will also be more likely to do better work. Big chains don't care about reputation or their insurance claims/rates as much as mom and pop shops.

no that I regularly, well almost never, take my car to a dealer for service I will not be going to the dealer I purchased the car from. This is in part to the dealer being alittle over an hour away from where I live. I purchased the car at that dealer because they where the only ones in New England that had the exact car that I wanted. Local dealer couldn't get the car transfered so I went to the source.
Now the two local dealers have a terrible sales force. However at least one is highly rated for their service department. So if I have to take my car in it would be to a local dealer.

I drive 25 minutes to my Hyundai dealer for the Veloster even though there is one 5 minutes away, the 5 minutes away one sucks so much balls its not even funny.
Same with my parents, they take their Fords 25 minutes outside of the city for service work.
You find a good dealer with a good service department, keep them at all costs because I had the terrible experience of having to deal with a dirtbag dealership once and it made me appreciate the Ford one even more.

I have a dealer within walking distance of home and have not bought from them but use them for service all the time.

Give them a shot. I service cars from other dealers all the time. Sometimes we can't beat a competitors deal and they buy elsewhere. Customers love our service department and bring cars of all makes and models to us.

Would you take your car to a dealer other than the one you purchased it from for warranty work?
The dealer I purchased from is a bit of a drive and there is a local dealer I thought I would try for service. I didn't purchase from the local dealer because their salesman suck, I have been in there on 3 different occasions over the years and the salesman won't even get off their A$$ to show me a vehicle. All 3 times I purchased a vehicle and never from them but maybe their service department is OK??? The local dealer has new owners and they remodeled the service dept. a couple years ago so maybe they have more focus on the service dept., the sales dept. still needs a lot of work.
