Elizabeth Yes a diesel when accelerating will 'blow' a lot more smoke.. if it is blowing smoke.
Grey smoke is really pretty normal for many diesels..
If it was black for awhile, now it may be cleaning itself out..
So your fixes probably worked!!
Just drive as usual. It should get better in a few weeks.
Long drives would be better than short hops, and yeah, accelerating is fine.

Rhinotested Thanks for the replies guys.

I think it is more of a grey smoke that comes out now, however it was black about a week or two ago.

I've not noticed any hissing sounds or groaning (only from the misses), so I'm hoping it is just crap in the pipes...

And is it normal to only have this smoke coming out when accelerating then?

What would be the way to get rid of old carbon deposits, my brother suggested high revs down a motorway...

whynotthinkwhynot Diesel black smoke= too much fuel, not enough turbo. Have you heard any hissing sounds from under the hood, or does the engine groan when you stomp on the pedal? It could simply be a loose turbo outlet hose.

elsolo Diesel, not gas.

Elizabeth Is the smoke BLACK, GREY, OR BLUE?

BLACK is not fully burned carbon. Your engine is running very rich.
Get a tune up, or have the fuel map checked/reprogrammed)

GREY is carbon deposits just old stuff (Normal)

BLUE is oil, something in your engine is worn out.
(Heavier oil could slow this down or special 'old motor' oil to help seals to seal up better.)

And WHITE smoke is usually water vapor. It could be a cracked block too...
And this is gas or diesel.. Just most gas cars do not blow grey smoke..(grey smoke is a standard diesel condition...) usually black or blue.. (or white)

Smoking Problem while accelerating

Wow, this site is awesome.

I am an absolute Noob when it comes to the mechanics of cars, I usually leave that stuff to my brother as he's the mechanic.

However, he seems to always be busy, and I like to know stuff, so I turn here, to FOcus Fanatics.

My problem is I have a Diesel Focus '03, and when I accelerate, no matter what gear I'm in, when I put stress on the engine it PLUMES out loads of smoke.

It was suggested that filters needed changing, so I changed the air and fuel filter. I then put it through a full service, so had clean oil put into the car.

Now, i think that the smoke is worse in the sense that it's "easier" to produce this smoke. I have been told that it could just be crap in the pipes, but I've tried "clearing" them many a time, but with no joy.

I was wondering if anyone could give me some advise, I'm thinking that if I can have an educated reason for what might be wrong then my brother may actually take a look at it for me.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
