This will happen one way or another...

Does any aftermarket source sell open "mesh" type grill inserts for the 3rd generation? I ask because I've ordered an Oxford White Focus ST and I'd like eventually to swap the "catfish" front end / bumper/grill with the standard Focus front end, and then add some more aggressive touches -- something like this:

However, it looks like the standard Focus grill is mostly closed, so simply swapping them could lead to air flow issues with the intercooler on the ST. So I'm really hoping there are aftermarket inserts that allow more air flow.

Thanks!

Negative. As long as oil is circulating fully (and that's pretty damn quick after a cold start), the only issue running cool is that the PCM will command a slightly richer air-fuel mixture. This is no different than going open-loop at WOT where the PCM commands a rich mixture to prevent detonation.

Plus, having cold coolant is a good thing when running WOT, especially on a boosted engine like the ST. Cold coolant will draw more heat from the combustion chamber than warm coolant. Why do you think racers push their cars in the staging lanes instead of letting them idle? It's not to save gas - it's to keep the engine as cool as possible for optimum performance at WOT. In my case, it's good for about .1 off my ET.

RebelDevilCustoms Hamiltonian, you could do the nose similar to our red sedan zetec style grills, and a few other adds

RonMaiden Swap the rear and change the exhaust a little and you'll look like a slightly modded SE trying to be an ST and you got a nice sleeper.

Eric MKIII Sdn Hamiltonian,

Have you swapped your grille yet for your ST? I have an OW Sedan I'd love to put the ST front end on. We could even swap considering we're the same color. I'm north of Pittsburgh PA.. Not a far drive to you.

DayGlow But the side inserts could be usable for the Newmission intake mod.

It looks like this mesh design would do a good job with air flow/cooling, although I'm sure the ST's intercooler will be doing a lot more work.
That's the Zetec-S body kit, with the mesh look on the grilles, but they aren't really more open than that of the standard car since its no more powerful than the basic models, and therefore doesn't have a need to cool more than a 2.0L i4 gdi, the 1.6L EcoBoost or up to the 2.0L duratorq diesel. Those are very much not open at all.
