Fairly trustworthy, I've "tested" it by pressing the reset button on the end to see if it returns to the same reading after driving a bit. One way to make sure it isn't stuck.
This type gauge is quite common on large trucks (also tractors, large power equipment of all kinds), familiar with it from them.

I'm looking to do this in a couple weeks (waiting for payday). I had a couple of questions that may save me money or some hassle. Plus the website is down so I can't look up the original instructions.
I have about 150k miles on my car and I really don't want to spend money for the same restrictive air filter when I can do something like this.
Should I go down to the wrecking yard and build this intake from the parts of a dead car? I would rather do that than possibly messing up on my original intake and ruin something. I've read that website a few times but I don't remember if this mod was destructive or just a matter of unbolting and taking things apart.
The goal with my car (mod-wise) is just to possibly improving gas mileage, not so much getting horsepower out of my car, even though it's always welcome. Will this improve my gas mileage by any significant number or at least anything noticeable?

Just performed this mod today! I am quite pleased with the results. I disconnected the negative battery cable while I was working, and reconnected it when I was ready to fire her up.
I just crawled under my car and secured the cone filter to the MAF tube after I had yanked the old factory element off.
The car was a little hesitant to start the first few cold starts, but now she seems to be running smooth with no Check Engine light. :)
I can't feel much of a difference personally, but just for looking at how filthy the factory element was and how much better the engine sounds, I am pleased with the results.

Got it on last night! I always have trouble with those black screws that you have to pry out but i just pulled the fender liner back enough not to have to worry about them.
Since I didn't have the stock MAF tube and resonator on the car to begin with all I had to do was get that old airbox out. Two of the bolts were so rusted I couldn't really turn them. Solved the problem by yanking down on it hard enough to break the airbox off at the pastic held in by the bolts. It's a little unprofressional and not very clean looking but you gotta do what you gotta do.
The K&N RX-4120 filter that BlazingCopper_ZX3 reccommended on his website (see link in the OP) worked perfectly. I attached it to the stock MAF tube I got from _fifth_ using some of the filter oil (it wasn't gonna be hard to fit without it but it is suggested), screwed my old MAF sensor into it and started to bolt it onto the car with the 1/2" bolt. This is the only part that may not be done right and will have to be fixed sometime down the road. The screw didn't go into the hole all the way. I checked to make sure it was the right spot (it was) and tried again. There could be rust or debris in there but its good enough for now.
Bolted the resonator with hydrocarbon trap onto the MAF tube. The TB boot was already attached to the resonator. If anyone is going to do this mod, do the opposite and attach it to the TB first. It took a while to get it on the TB properly but eventually I just broke out the filter oil, lubed it up and twisted it on there. Got the other side on the resonator and tightened the clamps. I'm not sure exactly what it is but theres some hose or valve or something that goes into the boot.
Then I took the air dam that I melted the cracks back together (practice for the bumper cover) and started to bolt it to the front holes in the bumper, then moving towards the sides and finally the driver side fender liner (the passenger side is cut there, but i did just get a new one to put on there. Whats awesome about the air dam being on there is that since its screwed into the bumper cover, its straightened the bent and cracked parts of the bumper cover and makes it look noticeably better.
I put the drivers side tire back on and was going to replace the cut fender liner, but the car had enough modding for the night and the lugs wouldn't come off with the tire iron. Need to have someone with an impact gun help me out.
Turned on the car and it idles about the same as the old SRI, haven't taken it for a test drive yet.
EDIT: Just did the test run to take some things back to my house. I can't really tell if it has better peformance than the old shoddy custom short ram but I do love it for the simple reason of being able to hear my engine instead of WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOSH from air being sucked into the SRI. It feels a little quicker and crisper but I'm not sure if that's real or just my imagination.

Yes, any lubricant will work to get the filter over the MAF tube, as I've stated countless times it will take some effort to get a 3" filter on a 3 1/2" MAF tube though.
They sell black duct tape for your broken splash guard, just say'n.

I'm considering this. I'm trying to replace this custom pipe/spectre filter SRI combo some (insert expletive here) put on the car before I bought it. I'm calling him a (insert expletive here) because me and another member discovered a week or two ago that whoever did it put the MAF sensor in backward and left an extra hole in the pipe for some reason. Also, he left the actual air filter part on the car. *facepalm*
It's fixed now but I've bought a stock intake complete with the airbox. Many people tell me that the airbox part is terrible for the car. This seems to be a good way to get rid of that custom pipe (looks to be leftover from an eBay turbo kit), use half of that stock intake, retain a stock sleeper look, and get a performance boost.
The main problem is that I don't have an air dam/splash shield on the car. Grabbed a broken one at a junkyard and I'm going to try to melt the cracks back together. My front bumper cover is also damaged but I believe it won't be a problem. Now I just need to find a suitable filter. Thinking the 3" ID Green Filter with the pre filter. Also considering a U pipe or elbow pipe for more splash protection. As for lubing the filter when putting it on, would filter oil work?
TL;DR: Previous owner iz dumb, considering stealth CAI, complaining about hurdles.

Dam "orangePeel" that's a big filter! You must have gotten the 6" long one.
I still have mine installed, going on 8 years and 103,000 miles now! I clean and re-oil it every 5000 miles when I change the oil. Still the best thing I've done.
Though I love this car I'm thinking of selling it to get a 2014 Fusion, my wife doesn't like it. She says it's too loud and too small.

I just did mine today! Took me about an hour and a half because I am very tedious and decided to tidy up some loose wiring.
Also removing the old filter box and the half hose connected to the snorkle was a little pain in the butt. But all in all a very simple mod, anyone with a regular tool kit and patience should be into some nice power real easy. :)

I used the K&N RU-3130, at first noticing there was some slight difference in the diameter of the tube to the filter I was worried. But that sucker is tight as hell on there without much work. I didn't tighten it up too much as I read there is a tendency to crack the tube.
So, if anyone else is looking into doing this. Do eeet!
