LiciouzSVT That's good to know! Thanks for that tip! I am going to do some research and try to figure that out.

imccrea In Colorado you only pay sales tax on the difference between the 2 cars.

EX:
Car is $20,000
Trade is $10,000
Taxable amt $10,000

Calculated at 8% you would save $800 so if you cannot sell your car for more than $9,200 than you might as well trade it.

I would check with state of WA to see if they do the same, IIRC most states do only a few don't.

LiciouzSVT Oh and does anyone know if you get the tax credit he is talking about in WA? I had no idea that there was such a thing for buying/trading a new car!

LiciouzSVT Maybe I said it wrong. I want your advice but not in person. At least not in person at the moment. You never know who you are going to be dealing with. Some sales people are very polite and don't try to force you into anything and others are like sign here sign here let's run your credit first. I know my credit is outstanding I would just like to ask questions before I am haggled. Sorry if that seems harsh.

imccrea Okay so you don't want a sales person advice but you posted in this forum so not sure what you want?

You will always get more for your current vehicle selling it outright, however in many states there are tax benefits to trading and the convenience of not having to sell it yourself. You just have to do the math on what makes sense for you financially.

Possibly purchasing a new Focus ?'s

So here is the deal. My lady and I just recently had a beautiful little girl. My girlfriend owns a 09 Kia rio.... Base model, no power locks, windows or anything. We owe way less than what it's worth. I have never bought a brand new car but have purchased from a dealer so I would like it if somebody who is not a salesman trying to breath down my neck can enlighten me on how things may vary.
The focus is more roomy on the inside. The convenience of power doors and locks is a huge plus because getting a newborn in and out of a car where you have to constantly unlock, lock, roll the window down when it's hot, roll it back up because it rains 30 seconds later (it's Washington) can be quite the chore.
Would you guys reccomend trading it in or trying to sell it ourselves? She also really likes the Mazda3. I think the focus looks wayyyy better. Could you guys help me compare and contrast the similarities and differences between them. Another thing to add, she wants an auto tranny.
I know I asked a lot of questions but you guys are the shiz and I know you can help. Any advice is greatly appreciated!
