  • Driving down road, Power Steering Assist failure
  • Pull over, restart engine, power steering works again
  • Next morning, start car, no power steering, restart car, still no power steering
  • Drop wife off at nursing school 150 miles away from home, with no power steering, strong arm the car to dealership.
  • Dealership says there is no Recall, No Warranty, Diagnostic alone is $100 bucks
  • will update this as day goes on, hopefully, someone from Ford Service will reach out and tell me how to move forward on this.

  • Dealership quoted me $1500 in parts and labor for "Electronic Steering Gear Assembly"
  • 04/04/2016 - Contacted Ford Service on here, no response, going to contact vie telephone
quick followup on 04/27/2016, ended up buying a junkyard electric steering assist off ebay 12 Focus Steering Gear Rack 371824 | eBay i made sure and buy the same year and body style (including tire size), i found a local mechanic who installed the steering gear for 450 bucks, he was hesitant because he said typically they have to be flashed, but we bolted it on and it worked great, no flash neccesary since it came off same model, just wanted to post this incase someone else was in the same boat, i still didnt want to pay 560 bucks, but im happy its over now i can sell this thing on craigslist.

CarpeDiem1420 That's unfortunate, sorry to hear that.

FS00008 They told me to go fornicate with myself. In politically correct and customer service savvy terminology of course.

CarpeDiem1420 Vehicle defect cases are extremely complex and expensive to pursue. To pursue a vehicle defect case against a manufacturer, a plaintiff's lawyer will have to spend out of their own pocket roughly $200-300K in litigation costs related to depositions, hiring of engineers/experts, and travel costs. These are the average costs a plaintiff's lawyer must spend with no guarantee that the case will turn out well for the plaintiff.

I say all that because it simply is not cost-effective to bring a case against a vehicle manufacturer unless there are significant damages. Vehicle manufacturers have essentially unlimited resources to fight every case to the end and so us lawyers would go bankrupt if we pursued cases where the chance and amount of recovery was very small. Hopefully Ford will do the right thing and fix your steering issue free-of-charge.

FS00008 What about for folks who were able to maintain control when the power steering failed? Mine went out at highway speed, but I was able to control it (albeit with extreme difficulty).

CarpeDiem1420 Our law firm handles vehicle defect cases and we're starting to look into accidents involving the Focus where possible power steering issues led to severe injuries or death.

I will provide an updated post when we learn something new.
