You're better off with the top on, to keep out excess engine heat and lower intake temperatures, IMO.
You have two options for the K&N drop-in:
I recommend the E-9289. With the plug out, you will have better flow with a louder, deeper intake tone without sounding obnoxious. With the plug in, it is quieter and works just like the E-2993 or factory filter. I run it with the resonator/silencer installed though.

|FASTONRACEDAY||ok thanks. is it safe to do a k and n factory replacment and run it with top of box off or would it be better to run it with the box top on and the kand n with resenator out?|

This is a pretty old post, but im just wondering.. i took out my intake resonator and put it all back together with top of air box back on and all. just no resonator. i also have my exhaust pretty open no muffler just two aftermarket resonators and no muffler. i have noticed that when my intake res is out it feels pretty solid and when its in my cars exhaust sounds like shit and slugs almost. it now sounds better and deeper. and feels like it pulls harder. am i hurting performance by just having the intak res out with an open hole at the bottom of my air box? i ran the car with the top of the air box off for a couple days, it was cool at first but then started slugging hella bad. and my gas mpgs where taking a shit. should i leave off the intake resonator? does it do anything? should i put a muffler back on my car?
all input will help.

AEM is the only true CAI since it moves the filter out of the engine compartment... It also carries a CARB legal sticker now
I'm running the K&N... _RED_ and many others are running the Steeda. FocusBoy58 is running the AEM.

Gotcha, thanks guys. Do the legit CAI's also move the filter away from the engine more at all?
And the question is... what do you think the difference between the two are... 2-3 hp?

|Some Guy From NY||By "full intake" he means like Steeda & K&N, where they replace the stock tubing with a less constrictive tube than stock. Less constrictive=better airflow.|

|_RED_||Full intake such as Steeda's or K&N's intake or AEM intake. When I did this the car had no after market options other then a drop in filter.|

Old thread but I'm at the point of wanting to do some basic mods.
I'm confused as to how the stock setup is any different from an aftermarket CAI system? RED above said:
