jamespt Bluefront and all others that have contributed to modification of making the seats recline more: You guys are geniuses. I can now take naps in between my 2 full time jobs. Thanks, James in Louisville KY

stephens Your 2001 should be same as my 2003, right? It worked perfectly for me and I haven't had any problems since doing it over 2 years ago.

did your mod work to recline seat all the way back

did your mod work

stephens I did this today and I'm really stoked about it!

Thanks to Bluefront and all who helped figure this out. Now I can get the seat back flat enough to slide surfboards in and still be able to see out the window and see the side mirror. Before doing this, my only option was to put the board all the way up on the dash which really blocked my view and was also able to slide around: now it tucks under the dashboard and rides solidly like I had always done on my other cars.

Chaput87 So has anyone done the mod, taken out the back seat, folded down the rear seat backs and checked to see if the seat will recline all the way down and flat when the seat is pushed up and the headrest taken off?

TerryB I'm bringing this back from the dead. Although it's a good idea and very easy to do, eventually the spring stop will snap. I did this when the original thread was started. It's been fine all this time. Unknowingly, it was causing way too much stress on the spring stop. The strenghth of the spring is more than I imagined. I have a 2001, so the spring stop is in the 6 o'clock position instead of the 3 o'clock position shown. Ford just pressed out a tab on the metal to make a stop. This is not a design flaw. It's directly related to the mod. For now, I have a thick piece of wire rigged up so the seat lock is operable. Without it, the seat back swings freely. I'll find a better solution, but at least it works for now.

bluefront If you sit down and think about it, you can come up with all sorts of ways to hurt yourself.......on paper. The feds do it all the time, and come up with new regulations to cover the possibility. IMO.... a large part of this has to do with people holding government jobs, thinking up stuff to simply justify their salaries.

Because there's some sort of safety regulation on the books (on anything), does not mean anybody ever got hurt......just that some remote possibility exists.

I wasn't trying to piss in anyone's Cheerio's, just stating some facts from experience. Just because you haven't heard of anyone being tossed through a windshield, doesn't mean it hasn't happened. Why else do you think the Federal Regulation changed so that front seats could not fully recline?

Mod as you will, sorry for speaking on the sake of caution.....

bluefront If you were anal about all this......you could modify this recline setup so the mechanism would only go to full recline if you pulled out a hitch-pin of sorts. Wouldn't be very hard. The rest of the time the seat would just be a standard non-reclining Ford seat.......boring.
