perhaps theres some difference with these new 16v engines .. but i cant really see it.
ive flooded cars in puddles several times, and if its so bad that it wont start ive had great success simply bump starting (for a LONG time .. towing back and forth for miles), any water thats got into the cylinders will eventually be pumped out and ignition will start working again. opening and drying anything you can get at easily like the air filter seems logical :) plus anything electrical you can find, blast it with wd40 (especially plugs).
as i said .. perhaps theres some reason not to do it with these computer controlled things, but in theory this should get you running.

|vanace||MyFocus... are you listening? Drain the friggen oil!! If it turned over when you pulled the plugs, then chances are the starter is fine. And the starter worked fine before you went into the puddle. Hey!! I see your in Federal Way. If you need some help figuring it out let me know. |BIGBADWORM||You might want to just suck it up an have it taken it. I have to think with water being involved here it's something maybe a pro should look at. Just my 2 cents.|

|Hank||Did you change the oil? Water may have ran down past the rings. Pull your dipstick and take a look, your oil level may be way high. FWIW that's how I finally discovered my motor was hydrolocked, after changing the starter and battery. After you've changed the oil&filter you can pretty much rule out hydrolock, and then it would seem your into something electrical ie; starter, or stater solenoid. Good luck!|

|MyFocusIsSlow||Hey I just pulled out the spark plugs and the wires and turned on the engine and a lot of water squirted out. So far so good, as far as I thought. Then I installed new spark plugs and then tried to turn on the engine and it tried to turn over but then back to square one and just clicked. what else could be the problem? Could it be that their is moisture in the distribitor cap or what?|

|2001focusse||is your car stick or auto? if it is stick, pull the spark plugs, put the car in secong gear and push it 2 feet to see if the engine turns to rule out the starter.|

|2001focusse||pull the plugs and tap the key to see if the engine even turns but dont crank it if it does. if it turns, drain the oil. if it doesn't you killed the engine.|
