zeller4 Thanks for the reply, I got the pulley off with some PB and a 1/2" electric impact wrench and realized I didn't have to use a puller. Finally putting it all back together now.

amc49 No, there is a mark on the smaller bottom sprocket that the belt runs on. Have to have pulley off to see it. Your mark 'knifed out' there is too big to time properly with. The missing tooth is for PCM to locate TDC at starting.

Harmonic Balancer / Timing Marks

9. Once these are out you will need to remove your harmonic balancer (the pulley on the crank shaft). This one is hard to get out. There are a few not to safe ways to get it out that I wont mention here. Be safe.
I have a 2003 Focus LX with 2.0 SPI SOHC.
Please see the attached photo of the harmonic balancer crankshaft position sensor teeth with two marks at "missing tooth" location - near the knife-point. Everything I've read so far says to remove the harmonic balancer. Do these marks have anything to do with the timing marks I should see after removing the harmonic balancer?

JeepFoci Finally got around to replacing the timing belt on the 03 ford focus 2.0 spi today. Surprising the most aggravating part of the job was removing the lower plastic timing belt cover (big hands). I got the job done in 4 hours. This thread was a big help! I would recommend to anyone in the future if they do, do this job, to remove the spark plugs it would make turning the crank alot easier.

Oh and that crankshaft pulley bolt? My Dewalt battery operated 1/2" drive impact took it off without a strain. It's rated at 300 ft lbs torque and even though the crankshaft pulley bolt is only around 89 I was still unsure if it would take it off, but it did!

tryingtofixthis That piston is pretty bad. I wouldn't want to myself. I would opt for another engine. You could replace piston with one from a similar.miles engine at the junk yard and recondition head replacing all the valve seats and those 2 valves, at the minimum , but I would also use junk yard ebb valves maybe.from a lower mile car, and some careful inspection.

In the case on engine internals, in particular, New doesn't mesh with old we'll, usually new means New all the way across. So one new valve, or one new piston usually means New all the way across, as well as new components that.attach to this pieces because if your in that deep, already, it makes a it worth it.

You could go junk yard parts, put it back to get her see how long it lasts, then go for a new engine. In my case I opted engine because the zetec is just a far better engine hands down.

They are non- interface.have built a dozen or so and can spin the crank all day and not hit a valve.

2000 Ford Focus SE Split Port

[ATTACH][ATTACH][ATTACH][ATTACH]Attachment 21345[/ATTACH][/ATTACH][/ATTACH][/ATTACH]Thanks for the post on the timing belt. I just changed mine as well but didnt have great luck. Before I changed my timing belt it ran great. After I changed the belt it ran good but had a small miss. Prior to taking the old belt off I tried to align the cam and crank at top with both notches. It didnt matter how many rotations I could not get them to both hit at the 12 o clock position. I had all the spark plugs out and could tell the number one piston was not at TDC. When I had the number one piston at TDC both the Cam and Crank shaft where at 5 minutes to the right of 12 oclock.

So I proceeded to change the belt with the number one piston at TDC and both the crank and cam at 12 o clock. I put the belt on and tried to rotate the engine 2 times but it the piston would hit the valves. Prior to removing the belt I painted the alignment of both the cam and crank. Next I took the belt off again and put it back the way it was prior to me removing. I checked the rotations of the engine and it rotated all the way through 2 rotations. I put everything back together and it ran good but had a couple of misses. I ran it for about two weeks and yesterday when starting my engine I heard a loud knock coming from my engine and it was idling bad. I immediately turned it off and had it towed home.

Next I removed my head and found out that the number one piston was hitting something. It may have been my valve but there are bits and pieces all in the number one cylinder. I believe my belt jumped a tooth and the piston and valve hit each other.

My question would be is if I have the head reconditioned can i still use the engine with the number one piston having cuts divots in the top of the cylinder. The engine still has good compression.
