Geezer The interior is totally gutted. All the seam sealers and mastics (tar like substances) are removed or dug out (a total pain in the you know what and best done when the sealers are cold as they'll break or crack easier....I did my rally car in the winter...others use dry ice and nitrogen). Most seams are held together by mastic and spot welds at four inch intervals or so. While these are good they tend to loosen up with abuse and flexing. The spot welds do not need to be removed. The idea is once everything is cleaned up, you go back and stitch weld "every" seam. It consists of a one inch weld then a one inch space followed by another one inch weld etc. etc. A wire feed mig welder is commonly used as it goes quickly. This prevents distortion which can occur with a continuous weld. The seam welding significantly strengthens the body but the key is the removal of the mastics.

Reinforced body?

Been looking at a lot of adds ref. Focus rally cars. Some say 'reinforced body' or 'seam welded'. While I know technically what this means, I have no idea of exactly what is done to the Focus body to be able to make this claim. Anyone who has a few minutes to spare to explain this to me would instantly become my hero. LOL
