amc49 I use #2 to get it off all the time. Make sure the socket is firmly on bolt head. Don't crank solid, just a blip usually does it.

I use a serp belt & visegrips to hold pulley in place to tighten it. I use no torque wrench and it may even be a bit low but with stock vehicles and no racing it's been OK. You may need it tighter. Bear in mind that holding OD while tightening the center is technically wrong as it loads the rubber in the damper ring but as long as no overwhelming force used it's OK.

Magus2727 Got the point of needing to remove my crank pulley.

Sounds like some of the options for removal are:

1. Put into 5th and press brake pedal (requires two people)
2. Put larger breaker bar on 18mm socket such that you can crank motor to brake bolt
3. Build a tool that will insert into the holes on the pulley... (I think this is what I did when I rebuilt my motor, have to find how I changed out the tool for that as I built it mostly for cam gear install/remove)
4. Get used serp belt and make a belt wrench (or buy a belt wrench)
5. Compressed air in Cyl to build compression and keep motor from rotating
6. Impact gun

To Tighten:

1. Option 3 or 4 above will also work to tighten.
2. Impact gun with TQ stick of correct value
3. Nylon/Cotton rope on compression stroke

Other thoughts or options? Went through the 242 posts on this thread thus far and looked like these were the options that were presented.

amc49 Save old timing belts and serp belts, they make great strap wrenches used with a pair of visegrips to cinch them down at a certain length.

willybos Just used this thread to successfully change my timing belt on a 2001 focus wagon SE!

thank you!

BTW i would edit the thread to mention using a strap wrench of some sort to hold the crank pulley / harmonic balancer while loosening that big nut.

Also the white out marking trick worked for me rather than using the timing pin, one mark on each gear and belt, matched it to the new one, voila!

MarsSVTF Hey i took a second look at my timing belt and i noticed it had a part number on on it and FORD and then GATES written on in. Does gates make the OEM belts for ford?

sailor 2 idler kit covers all possibilities, you'll only use the one that fits/matches (two sizes).

Order up the timing tool kit from Massive, not terribly expensive & definitely necessary to get it right.

MarsSVTF Quick question, i'm ordering some parts, do i need the kit with the 1 Tensioner, 2 Idlers? O the 1 Tensioner, 1 Idlers
