|heelflip101||I have had experience with with a 92 16v, 89 8v, 00 2.0, 85 8v, 03 turbo diesel, 03 1.8t, 06 gti 2.0 turbo,96 vr6 and many friends cars as well. I have had more problems with only the base models than with the 16v, vr6, and1.8t, the new gti on the other hand is a carbon deposit freak. The 1.8t is a great engine, but Bosch sensors suck "or at least the one on vw's"|

are you smoking crack, from someone that's been in the VW scene for years, the base model engines are like tanks, mind you they are very slow, but its nearly impossible to kill a VW 8 valve, which are the engines thats been a base engine in dubs for years, before the MKV's came out.
Now the 1.8T's have a huge amount of problems, from oil sludge to electrical gremlin's, I know of many people that did the APR stage III to their 1.8T's, mind you they are super quik, they also go into limp mode alot (due to o2 sensors, EGR values etc.) Now the VR's are super realible, they have coilpack problems, and the timing chain rattles in most with higher miles and are a PITA to change, tighten. But they are very strong engines, problem is they cost much more to mod then a 1.8T and your power gains aren't as strong. The best VR to find is the 24V but the 12V are nice too, my buddy has a turbo'd 12V VR6 and its awesome.
When comparing a VW to the SVT, like said before they are 2 different beasts, being VW's are more refined with much better interiors, but lack in handling "stock" (they handle nice for being stock, but nowhere close to the SVT). When comparing engines its hard when aside from the base 2.0, its a 6 cylinder and a turbo'd 1.8 not really comparable to a N/A 2.0 16V, now the 16V volkswagen engines of yester-year are a perfect camparison, problem is VW stopped with those engines after the MKII's, atleast here stateside.
My wife has a new rabbit with the 5 cylinder 2.5, mind you I don't like it (I owned 2 other 5 cylinder engines: 1 being the I-5 in the Chevy Colorado's and the other being in a VW Quantum <audi engine>) I feel the engine feels like a truck motor, It has lots of torque but not as much horsepower as the SVT, power deliverely doesn't feel right (mind you her's is an auto, well tiptronic) I love how her car looks and the interior, but driving it with the 2.5 kinda sucks, I imagine the 2.0T that comes in the new GTi's would be great! Well I have buddies that have new GTI's and I've never heard a complaint about them. Coming from the other 5 cylinder engined car's I've owned, its hare to believe they will have any major problems and will be builtproof like the earlier base model engines, but its early yet and hard to tell.
All and all its what your looking for, I switched from the dub to the SVT cause the prices of the SVT are much cheaper then that of VW's, most likely due to the foreign verses domestic deal and its nearly equal on the sporty side, also parts are cheaper, but I'm an avid fan of natural aspirated 16V 4 banger engines...

if you are set on buying either this GTI or SVT, then out of these two, I'd suggest the GTI based soley on the salvaged water and accident damage; some other cars to consider are the Mini cooper S and Civic Si from the same erra (02-05) all of the cars will give you about the same fun factor, for about the same buck. I personally don't like VW's; except for my friends 1985 turbo diesel, but thats no performance car...
My SVT averages 34mpg in the summer and 30mpg in the winter if I drive with cc at 70mph, which I tend to since I commute 100mi a day, my only mod is a K&N panel filter, so essentially its stock, and i have one of the "heavier" SVT's out there since my car has every option.

|heelflip101||The biggest problem with vw is they have horrible base model engines. If you want problems buy the base model 2.0 sohc or 2.5. I guarantee you will have problems, the reliability of the 1.8t is great, but with any engine your likely to have problems if you beat on it.|

|heelflip101||reliability is great if you have a stack of airflow sensors and a oxygen sensors. actually buy after market sensors online don't buy vw sensors, they cost more and go out right after the warranty is over.|

|heelflip101||buy the vw, and chip it. Its more than enough power with an K&N cone, chip, front mount and exhaust. The interior of v-dubs is so nice, the ride is just hard enough that you can drive it everyday and if its the 1.8t the seats are supportive and soft.|

was your GTi modded?? - a chipped GTi will beat a non F-I'd SVTF... I've put down a few lightly modded gti's once I got FI...

I have both a GTI and an SVT. They are both great cars in totally different ways. The SVT is definitely more fun to drive and faster on track, but in a lot of ways the GTI is a better daily driver.
That's a terrible deal for $8000. My SVT is going for $9000 with a clean title and a warranty...

|svtryan||SVT!! VW's are junk!! ive had a few girlfriends with vw's and they were alllllllways breaking and having MAJOR problems. and let me tell you first hand, SVT's are the shizz i aint never had a problem with mine :)|
