|bangadrum5||I am still here. I have decided to stick with the RX-8. Even though I have had a ton of recalls the last being the possible replacement of the engine. The 8 is just too much fun to give up. Minus the recall the chassis is possibly one of the best out there. I do thank you all for you input and knowledge and wish you all the best.|

I just wanted to add that just because you won’t be winning a jacket at Nationals is no reason to not try autocross on a Regional level.
Heck, some suspension tweaks and good tires and you could be quite competitive Regionally.
^^^ I couldn't agree more.
I finished 1st in STS, and 1st (tie) overall this year in MT Region 105 (90-100 members).
They just haven't figured out how to break the tie yet...

|GaryS||Whoa! It just struck me that we may be discouraging people from autocrossing their Focus. I just wanted to add that just because you won’t be winning a jacket at Nationals is no reason to not try autocross on a Regional level. It is the best way to hone your driving skills (many big time road racers started out in Solo II) and the Focus is a good car to learn in. Heck, some suspension tweaks and good tires and you could be quite competitive Regionally. As the Nike ads used to say: Just do it. I guarantee you’ll have a blast.|

In spite of this I will probably be driving my ZX3 in STS next season. My Miata is over 16 years old and will be retired from autocross duty when its last set of Kumhos is gone. No better than I drive I figure I can do as well in the Focus in STS as I was doing in the Miata in CSP.
I won't be running at Nationals again. As fun as it is (and it is fun) finishing at, or near, the bottom of my class gets old after awhile.

Yes, if it won it would be a winner. Excuse the sarcasm, but that's just typically the state of being as generally defined for the word, win, for a person, vehicle, etc. that wins - he/she/it is a winner.
I know; I didn't say that was the only thing to it. Just because I make an addition to the points being made doesn't mean I'm excluding other reasons for the vehicle's driving dynamics and class winning performance.
It's a poor oversight still. An MCS or Si does not have to travel the same distance to get around or between cones as the overall larger Focus does. That means less time scrubbed off due to not having to travel that extra distance or drive that much slower to assure proper clearance through the cones. The shorter wheelbase also gives both cars a quicker steering response as well as quicker transitional movements.

I wasn't posting the results of Nationals to show the MINI winning. I was posting those results to show that there have been some Focuses at Nationals, since GaryS thinks there has been none.
Oh, and there is a LOT more to it than just a car being "narrower and shorter" for a car to be a contender.

You misunderstood our (or at least my) intent. I didn't say it was a winner; I was simply adding to Aaron's statement about the possibility and that if a driver were to win in the SVT Focus that it could disrupt the Mini craze. On paper, the Mini Cooper S is the better choice. In stock form after driving one for a spirited drive and the SVT Focus afterwards, the Mini Cooper S was clearly set up better. I think the biggest advantage the Mini has besides a better weight and better gearing is simply in its dimensions.
You don't have to post results at Nationals; we know the Mini Cooper S has been dominating and how competitive it is. The Mini Cooper S has the clear advantage, but I wouldn't go as far to say that it's unbeatable in GS.
I also think they missed the factor of size concerning the Civic Si in STS compared to the Focus in the discussion, the narrower and shorter your car is, you can carry much faster slalom speeds with the same grip. I'm not going to be the driver breaking any molds here, so this is all just discussion to me.

Neil R Wilson took 41st in GS in his SVTF
David E Webb took 24th in HS in his Focus:
Jason Kolk took 26th, Ryan Schnackenberg took 27th, Dan Townsend took 36th, and Van Townsend took 37th in SM in Focuses
ALL at the 2005 Solo II Nationals....
The Focus and the SVTF is not a viable competitor on a national level in just about ANY class.
Like I said.....there's a reason people aren't using the car on a national level. It's just not competitive enough. Too heavy, gearing wrong, not the right suspension.......whatever. People will buy and use the best car for the class if it will give an advantage. The Focus has none.
Remember OmniFocus? It took him driving a MINI to place well enough at nationals. He couldn't compete in HS in his Focus until he drove a borrowed MINI.......

Also: Per Schroeder, in Grassroots Motorsports Magazine said that "the Mini is the easiest car to drive fast" and he's driven a lot. Best recommendation I can think of.
