Ford Denies Warranty Claim On Our Focus

I've been lurking on here for a while and never posted but I just had to share this. My wife has a 2012 Focus that is still well under its powertrain warranty. She got a check engine light that was on for a day and then went off. We took the car to the dealer and they found the issue under TSB 15-0034. There is a faulty purge valve that caused the fuel sender to go bad so it needs a new purge valve, fuel sender, and fuel tank.

Ford reviewed the warranty claim submitted from the dealer and decided that none of it was going to be covered under warranty. The fuel sender and tank are under warranty but they said that since the value (not under warranty) caused the problem that none of it would be covered.

The dealer told us how they thought this was BS and gave us the number for Ford customer service with a case number. Customer service told us that TSBs are just service manual updates and aren't issued to address problems. Then, get this, they were kind enough to offer us x plan so we could buy a new Ford vehicle. What a joke. I have x plan anyway through the MCA so it doesn't even matter. So basically we are out $1300 because Ford won't honor their warranty.

My first Ford was an 05 Mustang. Since then I bought a Fiesta and a 2015 Mustang. I convinced my wife to buy a Focus. I got my parent to buy a Fusion and a Mustang. My in-laws even bought a Fusion. I feel like such a sucker. Ford is just pissing in my face. I guess my relationship with Ford has come to an end. I was going to have some fun modding my new Mustang with Ford Racing parts but I've just lost motivation. I have been such an advocate of Ford. This really hurts.

I want to give a huge thanks to Greenway Ford service for their efforts to try to get Ford to see the light of reason. They have been very kind and professional through all of this.

This article supersedes TSB 13-12-4 to remove the production fix date and update the Parts List.

ISSUE:

Some 2012-2014 Focus vehicles may exhibit inaccurate fuel gauge indication and/or inaccurate distance to empty. The vehicle may also exhibit an illuminated malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) with diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) P0420, P1450, P0443, P0452, P0456, P0460 and/or P2196.

ACTION:

Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition.

SERVICE PROCEDURE
1.Does the customer report inaccurate fuel gauge indication and/or inaccurate distance to empty or does the vehicle exhibit one or more of the following DTCs: P0420, P1450, P0443, P0452, P0456, P0460 and/or P2196? a.Yes – proceed to Step 2.
b.No – this article does not apply. Refer to Powertrain Control / Emissions Diagnosis Manual or Workshop Manual (WSM) for normal diagnosis.

2.Replace the evaporative emission canister purge valve. Refer to WSM, Section 303-13.
3.Inspect the evaporative emission canister for liquid fuel contamination.
4.Is liquid fuel present? a.No – proceed to Step 5.
b.Yes – replace the evaporative emission canister. Use low pressure compressed air to clear fuel from vapor lines from tank to engine. Refer to WSM, Section 303-13.

5.Is the bottom of the fuel tank deformed more than 25 mm (1 in) upward?
a.No – repair is complete.
b.Yes – replace the fuel tank and fuel pump module. Refer to WSM, Section 310- 01.

The purge valve NOT being covered under the longer emissions warranty has recently been discussed in the MkIII section.

Didn't seem reasonable that an emissions part would only be under the 3/36 B2B warranty to any of the folks commenting there.

More Ford warranty shenanigans. I'm not surprised.

The so-called 'warranty' on my Focus was useless. Nothing ever got fixed on it... not the clunking suspension, not the crapbox transmission, not the razor-sharp plastic/metal trim peeling off the steering wheel... none of it.

It was the worst car ownership experience I've ever had, and I'm very glad that it's over. NEVER AGAIN.

The 2012 Focus was the only Ford I ever had that was such a problem. I have greatly enjoyed two 302 V8 Mustangs, a ford Fiesta, Mercury Capri 2000 and 2600, and 3 Ford escorts that all ran great, never a major problem.
In my Opinion this is a single event where Ford has responded terribly to a major transmission problem affecting many Focus owners and part of the problem is some of them are taking it without protest.

Wow, it's a bit sad that mostly one model of car with a non-manual transmission has seemed to piss off and alienate so many people (and or refuse to fix the problems or do whats right)..I'm hoping if im in that situation, I get treated right.
