Flex Fuel WoW?

Hey I just realized I have a flex fuel vehicle. Is this the norm these days? Is there anything I should know? I have never used E85 before.
I was looking at the window sticker and noticed this. Had the car since December.

Thanks

May I say you're typically blind - see only what you look to see - without getting an internet Whack in return?

When filling up the car, there's a notification right around the fuel 'cap' on the fuel you can use - colored ring with printing is the typical type.

DO check for this, as it's your official confirmation of what you found on the sticker - even more than a flex fuel badge on the back of the car.

Not the 'norm' yet but much more common. The Performance section for your car has long thread(s) on advantages/disadvantages of E85 use.

For practical use, the main thing is that it's cheaper - and doesn't take you as far (lower MPG) so you have to figure if it's a savings or not. After using enough for adjustments to be made it works best, and CAN give more power (not always).

What you actually get when buying it is a question, not very regulated, and in fact the "E" content is officially variable. Octane meets a minimum as well, not necessarily better. Those who try to 'tune' for it have to carry a tester just to sample fuel when purchasing, and re-tune if necessary.

For me, it's cheaper to run E85, and to me it runs better, plus the ethanol smell, E85 is around $1.60 and 93 oct E10 is around $2.50. From my observations, I get within 15% tank range with E85 versus 93 oct E10. I just wish I had closer stations so I could run it every tank, instead of 2 out of 5. It's E70 minimum where I get it, it's typically between E80-85, some are as low as E50, so you just have to pay attention.

I've tried to talk to local stations about carrying it, but misinformation runs rampant and people around here think it's the worst stuff ever.

My $0.02 as to why people hate ethanol.

Generally for cars without E85 parts, ethanol is nasty stuff that only lowers power and mpg, and over time adds to crud in the engine all the while subsidizing a farming industry that wouldn't have a reason to exist otherwise.

Also... wildly inconsistent fuel blend between tankers.

I want my 100% gasoline back but in my state 10% ethanol is standard by law. There's a farm store I can buy 100% gas for a $0.60/gallon increase over regular and it's amazing how well my older vehicles run on real gas.

I would run 110 octane AVgas if it weren't so expensive and leaded...

Am I wrong in thinking that we're the only country that tries very hard to push ethanol as fuel for cars?

Yes

Brazil has required Ethanol in fuel since 1931.

Min. E20- E27 more recently.

Higher grades up to E100 have been used, they're even fitting diesel buses to use special E95 for diesels.

Over 50% of fuel used is Ethanol there.

Thanks for the replies and info!
I am going blind Darn it! No wacks from me!
The DH didn't notice it either.
Thanks for the tip on the articles Sailor I will check it out.

I read a little on the internet about the fuel. Not diggin the fact that it could put dirt in my engine. All the above @Aaron

JP_GXP window sticker says 90 miles difference between them. FWIW. I thought it was cool that you could mix them though. I did read they put Ethanol in gas in the winter IIRC.

I will put gas in it the next few days and check it out then. Thanks for that info about the cap.
I drive 60 miles commuting 5 days a week. I thought it may help out. Doubt I will use it anyway knowing some of the risks and I have a choice.

This Focus gets better mpg than my last Focus even with my foot in it so I am not worried so much about that.

Most of us live where E10 is std. year 'round, but not so many where E85 is avail. at all.

Areas with little availability/use are where you are more likely to get 'crap' fuel - just like anything else that sits unsold a long time.

Verified it is E85/Gas.
There is a yellow sticker inside the gas tank door it says I can use both.
I looked up stations that carry E85. On the web it seems like all of the stations do around here.
I am usually on guard at the gas station.
My car is locked the alarm is on. Debt card is in my pocket and keys in my other pocket.
I recently lost my debt card I think that was the last place I used it.

They make Bourbon around here maybe that is why alcohol is easy to find here.

Big day tomorrow 17 Focus gets tint! I am so excited!
Same guy who tinted my other one is doing the new one.
He does wonderful work. It took months to get the appointment this time.
I need to get used to driving with the dark windows again.
Happy to have the back up camera this time.

I loved the tint on my last Focus 06! So stock I miss her! RIP
