Gas Light Mileage

How many miles has anyone drove after gas light gone off. My Dodge Caliber had 2 gallons of gas and I would push about 20-25 miles after light went off.

If I have a good memory, by law, when the gas icon show up, you have 50 miles. But, it all depend on how you drive. If the car think you can do 50 miles when the light show up but you start doing drag race, forget about that.

No law on that one here afaik, it's not smart to plan on more than a gallon's worth of driving when the light comes on.

You may have more avail., to get an idea it's best to see how much it takes to fill it at that point - not run it dry.

MkIII can have an issue with the purge valve which can also suck in the tank to give you MUCH less gas than you think you have, pay attention to CEL & typical fill amounts to make sure no problems are developing.

You are right. I took the time to search and it's not a law. The reality is a myth saying you should have enough for 1-2 gallons (about 40-50 miles). The best is to test it but I don't recommend because the gas pump may break in the process.

Back in the days of return type fuel systems that could refill themselves better & faster I carried a 5 gal. jug in a new to me car to test that more than once.

It's gotten to be an even worse idea since then, so going by how much it takes to fill after the light comes on and tracking the miles since then until fill up is a better idea. Gives you an adequate idea of where the light shows vs. listed capacity.

I once pushed the current car to a 12 gal. fill at 437 miles, that's too close to the 13 & change listed capacity. With mine (MkI) you need to push past the light coming on solid to get to a 10 gal. fill, the furthest that is reasonable.

I've only pushed it to and beyond the light once, transitioning from 93 E10 to E85, light came on at '30 miles to E' and about 20 miles later it was down to '5 miles to E.' I know it's not accurate, just put it in for reference's sake, anyway, it only took 11.5 gallons, so I could have made it a bit farther if I truly wanted to push it.

I typically fill up before the last 'quarter.'

I always flirt as close as I can get to empty. Not a good habit.

Depending on the Ford sometimes its when the computer thinks there are 50 miles left (and so the gallons is unknown) and on others it's somewhere between 2 and 2.5 gallons.

I once filled up right after the light came on (within 2 miles) and the car accepted a little over 10 gallons of fuel. So I'd say 2 gallons on the Focus.

A not of caution, if your entire tank is freeway driving then don't trust the number. I has 18 miles left according to the computer and ran out of gas 4 miles from the gas station near my house (it's right on a freeway exit). That entire tank was freeway miles as I was returning from Nashville to Metro Detroit. The light did come on with 60-some miles left according to the computer, so it probably had two gallons and realistically I wasn't getting 30 MPG anymore...

As a Michigan resident, Ohio has a tendency or raising fuel economy until you exit out of Toledo and back into Michigan lol. BTW MK3, I swear I'm not stalking you. I feel like I have been quoting you alot lately though.
