Door locks cycle when washing...

Yesterday I took advantage of a warm day and washed our cars (and my bicycle ;) and noticed when washing the focus that when passing the wash brush over the doors, the door locks cycled, like they do when you put your thumb up to the latch with the fob in your pocket. What I DIDN'T notice was if the locks just cycled 'locked' several times.

I'm not sure what 'sense' it uses when you put your thumb up to the sensor, but I wouldn't expect cold soapy water to activate it.

Door locks cycle when washing...

It doesn't require your thumb to work. To open you don't even need to touch the handle, simply placing your hand behind the handle will unlock the car. To lock it you simply need to touch the sensor. You can use your toe if you like.

Yeah, I guess I was describing the locking feature. Either locking, unlocking, or both were occuring during washing and I should have paid closer attention to which. I had the fob in my pocket so I assume no one could unlock it by dousing the door with a bucket of water ?

My ST does the lock unlock all the time when I rinse it off.
I never 'wash', just rinse off with my hand/palm as the scrubber.
The 'touch' sensor is bioelectrical sensitive. ""I wouldn't expect cold soapy water to activate it."" the water will change the electrical status of the sensor enough to make it cycle. The slight difference between water and the air is enough
It is no big deal.
I have no worries about it.

(I am surprised nothing happens from rain etc... I wonder if the locks would STOP cycling if you took the key fob far away, instead of in your pocket?
Or if it was left in the car.?. (IE the locks do not lock if the fob is inside the car)

It did this to me the first time I washed the car. After that I put the keys further away and it doesn't happen. Besides locking/unlocking, my mirrors would obviously also fold in and out constantly which was pretty annoying. So yeah, do t keep the key near the car when washing.

If the key isn't on you then it won't do that (or if its inside the car).

I never wash my car with the key in my pocket for this reason. It is annoying to see (and hear) the locks open and close all the time.

BTW, the water being able to activate them is the same reason most door handles don't work well in the winter. There is a TSB on salt getting into the contacts, but in reality if your car gets covered in salt the sensors just shut off (because they are constantly being "actuated" by the salt). It's super annoying, and it's why I expect to use my FOB from December to March to lock and unlock my car.

Rain BTW doesn't offer a large enough "surface area" of electrical contact like salt spray or the wash brush does.
