2015 Focus Key Problem

I recently had my second key go missing and suspect it might have been stolen out of my wifeís vehicle (her wallet went missing at the same time) parked behind our house. Still hoping it will shop up in the house somewhere but in the meantime Iím looking for options.

When I called the dealership they quoted over $1000 to replace the driverís door lock and ignition and provide two new keys as the only way to make sure that renegade key couldnít be used to steal my car.

The other option I thought of was reprogramming the computer of the car to not accept the missing key (surely it canít be that hard to delete a key?) but they quoted $300 for that job because they said at a minimum I needed to replace the missing key, as reprogramming it requires two keys. I donít need a second key right this minute (money is tight) and it seems steep to me. Googling led me to believe that 2 keys were needed if I wanted to reprogram it myself but the dealer should be able to do it with one. Are they just trying to sell me something I donít need to secure my car right now?

Ultimately I just donít want someone to be able to steal my car from in front of my house with the missing key. I can take precautions to make sure I donít leave anything in the car, so long as the other key doesnít work in the ignition anymore. Any thoughts or pointers?

Dealer price on keys/programming is high in general.

You could TRY a locksmith, but you need one who is familiar enough & with the right computer to actually hook up to the car and delete existing keys - then reprogram with a fresh pair that includes your old one.

Adding a new key alone leaves the missing one in there as an authorized key code to start the car.

Aftermarket alarm systemwith a starter kill would work but price could vary. Person could get into your car by unlocking with key but alarm would sound and starter would be dead.
