Can I use Zerex G-05 to top off?

Coolant is getting a little low in the overflow. Can I use g05 to top off, or do I need special Motorcraft fluid?

The car requires either Motorcraft specialty orange coolant (pre-diluted or concentrated and mixed to 50% water/50% coolant or a coolant that meets the following specifications VC-3-B (US) CVC-3-B (Canada) / WSS-M97B44-D

Zerex G-05 does not meet this requirement, but Ford WSS-M97B51-A1 instead which is the Motorcraft specialty gold equivalent.

Per the 5th printing of the 2012 Focus Owners guide:
Quote:
DO NOT MIX different colors or types of coolant in your vehicle.
Make sure the correct coolant is used. Mixing of engine coolants may
harm your engine’s cooling system. The use of an improper coolant
may harm engine and cooling system components and may void the
warranty. Refer to Maintenance product specifications and
capacities in this chapter

You can buy it from Amazon, your dealer, etc. Or you can temporarily get by with something like the prestone dexcool coolant that claims to meet the requirements of the Ford spec.

Whats the difference in the make up of the gold & orange coolant? Both are used in aluminum engines.

Different additives and other chemical differences that make them incompatible with each other.

Quote:
Ford does not recommend mixing coolants. Mixing of engine coolants may harm your engine’s cooling system.
"Universal" coolants generally do not contain silicates and nitrites, both of which are required for Ford vehicles
equipped with Motorcraft® Gold Antifreeze/Coolant. Thus, these "universal" coolants generally do not meet
Ford's coolant specification WSS-M97B51-A1.

Use of non-approved "universal" coolants may lead to eventual engine damage or failure. Problems caused by use of non-approved "universal" coolant may not arise immediately, but may occur over longer periods of time
due to additive compatibility issues.
Quote:
What may be some of the consequences of using the wrong coolant?
Reduced corrosion protection of cooling system components
Incompatibility with engine gasket materials and o-rings
Corrosive attack of aluminum components
Cylinder wall cavitation and engine block damage
Potential water pump issues
Plugging of small coolant passageways

Nitrates vs. hydroxides as well per the MSDS for each type, though the specific mixture and ratios are a trade secret.

Motorcraft Specialty Orange is an organic acid technology based coolant like the GM Dex Cool, vs. the hybrid OAT/ non OAT Specialty Gold which can be used in engines that used to require the green coolant if specific instructions are followed on flushing the system first.

So it seems the orange coolant is the best vs the gold. As it seems the gold is the next step up from the green & the orange tops all. I'm sticking to the gold + I flushed out my system w/ a new t-stat a couple yrs ago.

Gotta stick to the original type unless moving up from green to gold properly as described above. The orange needs to be a factory fill from dry/clean.
