Emergency brake warning won't deactivate

So I drive a manual 2012 SE and this past weekend the parking brake alarm started popping up on the main dash screen even with the handle fully released. Has anyone run into this problem? This is my first post, sorry if it's in the wrong spot.

Does the handle still have tension when you lift it? You're in the right place.

Yes, the handle still functions correctly and I haven't observed a drop in mileage or power that would indicate that the brake was actually being applied

I would find a slight hill and apply the H. brake while not in gear. then release it and see if the cars moves. That would tell if it is not releasing. It might be the switch sticking, thinking it's still on.

Have you checked your brake fluid?

Good idea, I'll try that.

Nope, not yet. But I thought the hand brake was cable operated and not fluid operated

The hand brake is cable operated, but the "brake" light doesn't only indicate when the hand brake is applied, but when there is a brake system fault such as low fluid or an abs fault.

It's most likely the brake fluid. Check that first!

If the fluid level is low unless you have a leak don't add a lot of fluid as that usually means your pads (or shoes with rear drums) are worn excessively and need replacing.

I.e. if it's low it's usually due to worn out brake components causing the level to drop further to maintain near contact with the brake disk or shoe, and you should have that inspected after noticing the low fluid level. If there is a leak then that also needs to be corrected.

This wouldn't come up because of low fluid, would it?
