coolant issue

My 2013 Focus SE sometimes takes on a coolant smell, like there is a leak somewhere. While still under warranty I had it to the dealer 3 times and they couldn't diagnose it, opened a case with Ford customer service in Dec. 2015. The dealer fixed an oil leak that I had noticed but not the smell of coolant. Just this past week I noticed the smell again and saw some coolant pooling on the back side of the transmission housing. Now that it is off warranty I sent the dealer a picture that I took with my phone, all they said that they would get back to me, has been four days and haven't heard a thing except that they got the pic. The car has only 22875 miles on it, but the 36 months is up for the warranty. I did take it to the dealer almost immediatly when I noticed the smell (had to schedule an appointment). My question is 2 part: has any other of the Focus Forum folks had/have a similar problem? If so, where/ what is the problem and the fix? Thank you fellow Focus Fanatics

My Focus is slowly losing coolant (about an inch or so on the expansion tank each week). Mine is scheduled in for the mechanic to take a look at this Tuesday so I'll let you know what he says.

I can't find any visible leaks in the obvious spots, bearing in mind I'm not an expert.

What Foci do best , leak slowly to drive you crazy. One fix only, you gotta get up under the car to LOOK. You WILL find it if doing so. Even a few drops if they fall to get heated really good where they impact will smell to where you pick up on it. Often you are looking for a single drop at the end of a coolant hose where clamped.

I was losing coolant a little, starting about 90,000 miles. Turns out the coolant tank was leaking. My mechanic, after ordering the tank, commented that Ford must have a small problem with either the tank design or build.

Tricia:

Thanks for asking. I'm at 100k miles, so 10k after the coolant tank replacement... doesn't look like I've lost a drop since then... :-) Car runs great. My one big gripe is the coot hooks...
