390 watts for the entire system isn't all that much when you put into perspective w/ the number of speakers there are, and let's just say 50-65% of the 390 watts is for the subwoofer... That leaves not all that much left for the door speakers, thus the issue with the "premium" Sony system-not enough wattage for the speakers

There's SO much more to the performance of a sound system than just power - quality of the source and the drive units to name just 2 !!

Are those ratings for peak power? RMS power? At 1% or 10% THD?
How about the efficiency of the drivers?

Ignore the power ratings. They are essentially meaningless.

Hahha. I remember when having a 50 watt amplifer about the size of a radar detector was bad ass. Two cars driving 70 on the freeway could listen to one system. Yall must have been born deaf from us feeding yall too much Rock-N-Roll in the womb. LMAO

All I know is that on the back of each woofer it states "25w". The material is a hard blue plastic and when tapped gives a cheap feel. Edges are thin and don't offer much excursion.

The sony system had me satisfied for over a year. Then I sold my summer toy (turbo miata) and was forced to drive my focus everyday. Now I put a pair of $40 infinity speakers in place of two of the sony front woofers. The improvement was so great that I am actually mad. I then added some sound deadening to all doors and hatch area. The speakers and sub sound awesome now. But if you want to go past 3/4 volume you will need an amp, they tend to get a bit muddy. Which puts me at my current situation. Do I really need it?!

99% of the time i am fine, volume at 1/2 is plenty loud now. I bet when summer comes back around and I ride with the windows down, I'll need to get that amp!

Have you tried disconnecting that center speaker on the top of the dash, aimed up at the windshield?

I replaced all my door speakers with Infinity Reference X REF6500cx. The capability of the Infinities was apparent, but something sounded "off" to me.

I disconnected the center speaker, and there is a significant difference for the better.

Without replacing the amp, I can pump the volume to where the sound is satisfactory up to about 50mph. At Interstate speeds, the volume is insufficient, so I'm waiting to pounce on a great deal for amp + signal processor.

Degree of difficulty to replace the door speakers? Did you also replace the tweeters?

I did a thread on replacing the 4 door speakers. Did not upgrade tweeters as the Infinitys I got have tweeters included in speakers. Sound quality is a good bit better than stock. Check it out:

I am very glad you made that thread and recommended these Infinity Reference 6502ix

I have a 2012 SEL with the sony system and changed the 4 door speakers to these Infinity speakers and had the tweeters angled upwards and it sounds much better

All other speakers were left untouched just as you recommended too

I got the speakers for $110 for all 4 total and I had a local stereo shop install them and add polyfill to my subwoofer and they charged me $100

So in my opinion, the $210 it cost me for this upgrade was well worth it, and anyone else with the Sony system, I highly recommend doing this
