Traded in my '12 Focus for a Cmax

Overall, the Focus was a great car other than the huge DCT failure that left me without power in the highway twice. Fortunately I was not hit in either incident and the transmission module was replaced in spring 2014 and has behaved perfectly since. Sync was incredibly buggy and annoying, but the new upgrade allowed me to enjoy bluetooth streaming better for the last few weeks I owned the car. I probably would have kept it to 6 years/100k miles for the extended warranty, but we need more space in the back seat now.

In summary my experience of 4 years and 66,000 miles with the Focus is:

Pros
  • Love the handling, very sporty responsive car
  • Roomier inside than it looked, could haul a lot of cargo too
  • Averaged 34 MPG combined highway and city
  • Sync was useful when it worked
  • Very low maintenance - I still had 5mm/6mm on the original brake pads at trade in with 66k miles! The 10k mile oil changes were all it needed.
  • The cost of owning this car was very low between the low maintenance and the good gas mileage, for a good quality feeling car

Cons
  • Ford should have been far more pro-active about the DCT issue. Many of us were put in very dangerous situations by the catastrophic failure of the system. Fixing it only after I lost power on the highway TWICE put me in danger twice. They only did a software fix first time, and that was unacceptable.
  • Rear seat a little cramped especially for child seats, without pushing front seats forward and angling toward windshield - which is very uncomfortable for adults in the front
  • I banged my head getting in and out countless times, and I am not tall!

So far I am very pleased with the Cmax Energi, it offers more space inside, with a similar feel to the Focus though not as ground-hugging obviously.

How is cabin noise on the Cmax vs the Focus? At highway speeds?

Congratz on the new purchase. My local ford dealer uses a cmax as a shuttle when they are doing service on your car. so ive been in it a few times. seems very roomy and effiecient.

If I wasn't a cheapskate I'd trade for a CMax as well. Love the mileage on those. Enjoy!
