Rear brake lamp failure?

Hi,

So yesterday my focus decided to throw off the message that one of my rear brake lamps out. I went to check and none of the lights actually went out. I turned the car on today and I didn't get that error until I turned off the car and turned it on a second time. Is this an electrical issue or is one my light bulbs just going in and out?

Bulbs dont just go in and out. The only way a bulb could do it is if it has corrosion. What year is the car? Has anything electrical been done to it? How many miles are on it? Take the bulb out and check to make sure the fillament is good and solid, if the bul rattles, it is more than likely bad. Make sure the connections are good and wires coming out of the connector are good. If the message is up, pull over and check.

Bulbs can go in and out if the filament is broken, not burned out. The break most often occurs where the part of the filament that lights up is connected to the filament holder. While the car is not moving the ends of the filament can make contact, and the bulb works. Any vibration to the car can cause the ends of the filament to separate, giving the "bulb out" error message. I've had this happen to me at least twice during the 50 years I've been driving.

It's a dual filament bulb. Perhaps the brake filament is broken. Did you see your tail lights with somebody/something pressing the brake pedal?
