Shutting off the "Honk"?

So my '13 honks when I get out and close the door while the engine is running. I understand this is most likely a safety feature for stupid people who are not aware their engine is still running.

Is there a way in the settings to either shut off or change the honk? It always sounds like I'm honking at people when I get out. I actually have had a few people look at me when I jump out of the car for a minute. I didn't see anything in the owners manual, unless I missed it.

Your car honks? Mine ('14) just chimes if I've left the engine running and I open the door.

That's really odd.

Around here if you get out of your car with the engine running someone will drive off in it before you get back. (Sometimes they don't even wait for you to get out.)

Whoops, I should have been more specific. I have the keyless ignition.

If you get out (with the key fob) and close the door, the car honks. Same thing with the hatch, if the car is running and I open the hatch to throw something in, then close it, it honks twice.

It is letting you know there is no key in car. If go in house and leave key on table and return to car and open door it will honk twice again and give key not in car message. You can clear and drive it off but if ever kill it no way to restart it. They can steal your car. Older premium Ford/Lincolns would not let you lock car with keys inside so couldn't leave it running locked or lock with keys even in ignition. Pull and leave keys on seat or console you were done and locked out. It trying to override a brain fart.

There's still a way to restart it within 10 seconds of turning the car off at least per V5 of the 2012 Focus Owners guide.

Quote:
Fast restart feature: The fast restart feature allows you to re-start
your vehicle within 10 seconds of switching the vehicle off, if a valid IA
key is not present when the vehicle is switched off. You can re-start the
vehicle (by applying the brake/clutch pedal and pressing the
START/STOP button) for up to 10 seconds, even though the IA key is
not present. After 10 seconds have expired, you can no longer start your
vehicle without the IA key present inside the vehicle. If the driver door is
opened within this 10 seconds, the fast restart timer expires immediately.

Does yours' have the B pillar key pad entry? If so, you can hold the FOB up to the B pillar for a second or 2 and it won't honk. At least that's how the Explorer's work. haven't tried it on my 16 Focus yet.

I think he meant that it honks when he exits the vehicle and CLOSES the door, while the car is still running. Mine does this too. I'd sure like to disable this annoying "feature". As was mentioned, if I hold the fob near the pillar, it won't. I haven't found a way to disable the honk when closing the trunk though.

You can prevent the honk by fooling it into thinking the key is still inside. With the key in hand, get out, but keep your hand in the car along the a-pillar, near the steering wheel. Quickly withdraw your hand and shut the door. For that moment, the car thinks the key is still inside and won't honk. Or....you can roll down the window, stick your arm through the window, shut the door, remove your arm and auto-up the window.
