General engine noise

To me, my MK3's engine sounds pretty tappitty, almost like it's blowing somewhere (which it 'might' be, I've not looked).

Is this normal? (I can still here it when I'm listening to the exhaust at the back of the car).

Possible sources of the sound:

Direct injection fuel injectors.

DI high pressure fuel pump.

Evap solenoid.

I mean it sounds like a loose engine, or an old 8 valve POS ford engine, not really what I would have expected from a modern car. I actually feel a little embarrassed starting it up. I've owned quieter diesels, with 260k on the clock.

I've noticed in other video's even of other fords that the tappity noise is pretty prevalent. (It is not what I would normally expect to hear with 'tick tick tick tick' of injectors.)

Like an old OHV style engine with worn roller rockers...starts to sound like a small diesel?
