Best Hwy speed for best mileage?

Going on a 900 mile round trip this weekend and was wondering what speed I should try to stay at or under on the interstate for best fuel economy?

I cant say what speed the mk3 reaches its peak for mpg but generally the slower you go the better mpg you will have.

See their section on Observe the Speedlimit and enter you car info into the "What is the Penalty for my car?" Can give you an idea on what higher speeds do for your mpg
https://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/driveHabits.jsp

Although on a 900 mile trip, the difference in straight drive time from 60mph to 65mph is over an hour and 60 to 70mph is over 2 hours... I generally dislike being in the car longer than i need to on long drives, so the extra cost is fine by me if i get save an hour of drive time. Of course, depends on the flow of traffic and speeds you can safely drive

Best?

45 MPH.

Practical?

Go with the flow for nice easy cruising without much speed change. Typically 2-5 mph over the posted limit (by the speedo), rolling easy in the right or center lane (depending on # of lanes).

Pushing it to stay with the fastest traffic burns fuel, and where the road is busy & three lane the right lane doesn't flow smoothly.

Most roads that means 67-70 currently, mileage drops at 75.

Whatever speed you can manage whilst "drafting" the car in front. At least that's the technique I've seen around these parts every morning ;-)

The usual speed was 55mph as typically set in UK car's for the most economical speed with the power and gearing.

I found that on trips 65 works best for me. Last fall went to Annapolis, total trip a little over 1100 miles, averages a little over 38mpg.

I get about 44 at 70 with Denso Iridium TT spark plugs. It was about 41-42 at that speed before the spark plug change.

38 was the average for the whole trip. That included driving around Annapolis, back and forth to the motel etc. At one point I was getting 42.6mpg
