doors unlocking when trying the door handle

i have a 2012 focus SEL. when i lock all the doors with the keyless entry, all the doors will lock. however, if i try to open the drivers door, the door unlocks on the first pull, and then opens on the second pull. the alarm starts to beep and goes off after 10 seconds. any ideas of any mode the car may be in to why this could be happening??

Moved to the MkIII section for more responses on operation of the system.

Are you saying the doors unlock from the outside when you pull the handle?

Hi branden,

I checked out your Owner Manual, and here's what I came up with:

Quote:
Intelligent access (if equipped)
Your intelligent access system uses a radio frequency (RF) signal to communicate with your vehicle and authorize your vehicle to unlock when commanded (either by touching the inside of any exterior door handle.

If your IA key is within 3 feet (1 meter) of the doors you can activate your intelligent access system by touching the inside of any exterior door handle. The door(s) will automatically unlock and the door can be opened.
As far as the alarm goes, here's what I was able to find:

Quote:
PERIMETER ALARM SYSTEM (IF EQUIPPED)
The perimeter anti-theft system will warn you in the event of an
unauthorized entry to your vehicle.
If there is any potential perimeter anti-theft problem with your vehicle, ensure ALL remote entry transmitters are taken to the authorized dealer to aid in troubleshooting.

Arming the system
When armed, this system will respond if unauthorized entry is attempted. When unauthorized entry occurs, the system will flash the park/turn lamps and will sound the horn.

The system is ready to arm whenever the key is removed from the
ignition. Either of the following actions will prearm the alarm system:
• Press the lock control on the remote entry transmitter.
• Open a door and press the power door lock control to lock all the doors, and then close the door.

Disarming the system
You can disarm the system by any of the following actions:
• Unlock the doors by pressing the control on your remote entry transmitter.
• Turn the ignition on or start the vehicle
• If using a key in the driver’s door to unlock the vehicle, a chime will sound when you open the door and you will have 12 seconds to disarm the alarm system using any of the actions above, otherwise the alarm will trigger.

Triggering the anti-theft system
The armed system will be triggered if any door, trunk or the hood is opened without using the key or the remote entry transmitter.

Meagan

SEL's don't have IA as far as I know, so the doors shouldn't unlock by touching them.

It sounds like what would normally happen if you tried to open the back doors from the inside, is happening to you from the outside. If you are in the back seat, you need to pull the handle twice to get out. (First is unlock, second opens the door). Sounds like some electrical gremlins.

Are you using the key to open the door? This does not turn off the alarm so you have to put the key in the ignition within 10 seconds or so or the alarm will assume that someone has broken into the car even if it was opened with the key.

Unless you have a Titanium, ST, or Focus Electric you can't just walk up to the car and pull the door handle with the car locked and open the door.

If you're having the car behave as if it was opened off the door's lock cylinder but using the IKT fob I'm not sure what's going on as that's not an operating mode I've seen before.
