Paint Damage - Warranty coverage and cause?

I've had my 2013 Focus since Feb 2013 and it has around 21K miles on it now (bought new). I clay bar'd and waxed it last weekend for the first time this Spring and noticed this weird bubbling in the paint (lower right of passenger rear door). It was not there last fall and I washed my car pretty regularly over the winter to remove salt (touchless car wash). I have not had any damage or body work on that area, so it is the factory paint. It is not scratched/scraped in that area. It appears to be 'bubbling up'. Does anyone have any ideas of what caused it and if it's something that might be covered under a warranty or how to prevent it from getting worse? TIA

I can't say for sure but seeing that you are living in Michigan, I wouldn't be surprised if it was cancer (what us car guys used to call rust up under the paint from road salt) I would definitely have it looked at.

Thanks for the reply. After reading some on the interwebs, I have some hope it might be covered under warranty. There is no chip or scratch there. I lived in MI 7 years before getting the Focus and did not have any rust issues with my previous vehicles (which were certainly much older than 1 year). Vehicles are garaged and washed regularly .

I have a similar issue going on with mine but it's underneath of the hood and inside the rear passenger door jam. I was approved for the warranty repair but idk if your case will be the same due to the location of the spot and also your state of residence. I'll snap a picture of it tomorrow because I have to wait a couple weeks until they can fit me in.

I would definitely take it into the dealer.

I had similar rust on the underside of the trunk lid and Ford repaired it under warranty and just the other day I noticed paint flaking around the taillights. Ford has also approved this for repair.

Thanks for the recommendations. I took it to the dealer and it didn't sound like it would be an issue fixing it under warranty. They're sending pics to Ford and I should hear back in a day or two.

Just to follow up, Ford is going to cover it under warranty and repaint.

Currently waiting on a new hood and round 3 of having the Tangerine Scream Tri-Coat Metalic spray. All under warranty.

Glad they're covering it! I had some bubbling on the edge of my '12 Mustang hood (common problem) and they covered it no questions asked. Even gave me an entirely new hood!

Great! I'm in the same boat as you are, but mine is worst
:(
Bubble paint

I'm not worry about Ford taking care of it, but I'm very worry about the paint match job! It's a brand new car! Repainted? Gosh!
