Hundred to one I bet the op just forgot to lock the car door.
EVERYONE forgets sometimes..
And plenty of perps walk down the street trying car doors for that very reason.
So if I were the op, I would stop worrying and remember to lock the doors.

IMO: Why would a pro (carrying such tools) bother with a car with nothing in it? and NOT know the car (Fords in general) has that exact sort of alarm?

So it was just a 'crime of opportunity..'

Well, how do we know nothing was in it? There could have been something in it. My brother in law is a police officer in a suburb and busts guys with locksmithing tools (and a trunk full of car stereos, electronics, cash, jewelry, purses) all the time. These guys aren't smart. If they were, they wouldn't be stealing! May not be aware, at all, that the Focus has a factory security system. They just see a car, something in it, boom.

Though there is a good chance the door just got left unlocked; it wouldn't surprise me to see thieves with locksmithing tools. They aren't expensive or hard to get. There are also 'code blasters' that fire random unlock codes until the door unlocks. Not sure if they are effective against the focus or not, but if they are; it doesn't get any easier. Push a button and wait for the door to unlock. Open it up; good to go! You don't have to be a 'pro', just buy the tools on eBay. More often then not, these 'trades' get passed down. One buddy tells another buddy what he used to steal a stereo out of a car, so he goes around and tries it after borrowing his buddies tools or buying them (they sell them at auto parts stores even).

Thieves will steal ANYTHING, so don't think he had to leave his iPad in the passenger seat for it to happen. Thieves were throwing bricks through windows to steal cigarettes and loose change at a mall near me. A few electronics and purses were stolen, but for the most part they were just collecting change out of ash trays, and packs of cigarettes stored in glove boxes. Heck, at my high school a student broke into another students car to steal their radar detector. (Too bad they forgot about the cameras in the parking lot; maybe they should've had a camera detector!). It's NOT just high dollar electronics that are lifted from cars! (Though I wouldn't suggest leaving anything of value in your car and certainly not in plain view!)

That's the first thing I thought of, but why then did the Alarm go off? I think it only arms upon locking the door.

I don't know on the Focus, but I know on my Saturn it armed with the lock button, regardless if it was actually locked. Meaning if I hit the button on the door as I got out (I realize the button on the focus isn't on the door, but bear with me), and unlocked it, it would still be armed. If you then opened the door, the alarm would sound. And yes, usually I shut the door behind me then lock it, but I found that out by just grabbing the key and locking it AS I got out.

IF the focus is the same way, then you couldn't hit the button while still inside the car, somehow bumped the unlock button, then gotten out with doors unlocked but system armed? Who knows. Anything could happen I guess.

Good question. I don't know. I'm sure they are in eBay.

All you need is any kind of wedge, a blood pressure cuff, and a clothes hanger.

Wedge door slightly, expand gap with pumped up blood pressure cuff, press or unlock or pull door handle with clothes hanger.

You've just robbed a car

Hi Darth_Focus,

Yes, your dealer can reprogram those for you. I'm happy to hear that your're safe! I encourage you to get this checked out at your dealer; it might be nothing but it's always better to have peace of mind. :)

or just pry the door from the car enough for a long, straight pole to push the button on the dash.

I really dislike that button placement....
