I find S mode helps the characteristics of this transmission when driving in the city or
heavy traffic, stop & go.
I agree. In stop n go traffic S mode performs much better than D mode. Less shifting back n forth and more responsive to slight acceleration inputs normally experienced in this type of traffic

I thought it was weird and did it again, same thing. I didn't want to test the theory, but if you go to redline on S mode, does it shift automatically?
Had this happen to me before too. However, I think I may have pushed the shift up button at the same time as the trans was shifting on its own, which made it jump two gears.

So it shifts automatically in S mode when you redline?

Yep. Since it's computer controlled, the car isn't going to kill itself.

The manual is a bit vague on that, but yes it basically says the computer will upshift or downshift to avoid any damage if the driver forgets.Ive never tested it upshifting as per rpm but downshifing works well on mine, the computer does it smoother then I can most of the time.

S auto mode is fine when you are not exceeding ~40 MPH.
Although it won't automatically shift into 6th gear while in S-mode, you can always manually shift it into 6th gear while in S-mode.

It also employs some mild engine braking when slowing down. Pretty neat. Even with the DCT, this would be an able AutoX car with the right suspension goodies.

I just figured it would let me upshift around redline. I swear I timed it well.

I think the "smoother" comment about downshifting only applies to auto trannies, as if were a manual, I can downshift pretty well. But definitely some good info to keep in mind.

That should be totally obvious, no?
It would be pretty stupid if you couldn't select 6th gear in manual mode.
