new guy debating Focus/Civic/Corolla

I'm considering a new car and the suspect list is the Focus SE, Civic LX and Corolla S. The Focus has far better incentives than the other two and similar overall specs and equipment. Money talks so I'm leaning toward the Focus. My plan is to drive whatever I get for 13 years until my grandson gets his license and then give it to him.

Yeah, I have a suspicion at least. I think I'm leaning that same way, especially with the AQHA discount added into everything else.

For the love of God, get a 5 speed. That is all.

If you want a car with a manual transmission, the Focus is the clear choice. If you want an automatic I'd be very cautious: Ford is still wrestling with the dual clutch transmission (DCT) in the Focus and there are a discouraging number of owners that have problems that Ford and its dealer network can't or won't fix.

Short of a car that won't move a too-frequent dealer response to a DCT complaint is "it's normal".

I don't want a Mazda. Too many uncertainties right now. I'm leaning toward the manual to save the $1100 up front anyway.

It boils down to what do you want in a car overall.

Corolla is a sedan and my nephew has it and I hate it, its only 132 hp

Honda is under powered its only 140hp and the dash is horrible, my neice has a 2010.

Focus has the power (160hp), the looks (Hatch) and interior that is superior to the others.

The only other car that might be slightly better is the Mazda 3 but it also has only 148hp. I believe that the skyactiv engine gets better mileage, but that is something you will have to see for yourself.

focus hatchback FTW.
It doesn't feel like an economy car and its fun to drive. The styling is great too. I'm sure your grandson would have a blast driving it in the future.

Fixed that for you. ;)

OP, of the three you're looking at, hands down a Focus SE with the 5 speed.
