Now I know it's a SUV, and the Focus is a "economy" car so they are in different leagues.

I am looking at a five year total cost of ownership (TOC) of just under $38,000 based on my zip code and 15,000 a year. (purchase price, maintenance, insurance and gas).

He is looking at a TOC of $98,000 based on the same. He boasts that he is driving a performance car, so the cost is more. Ok, it's (the Q7) .5 of a second quicker in the 0 to 60 time, lower top speed (the Q7) and the handling is rated at a .85 on the skidpad versus my .91 ( I have the sport package with the Pilot 3's).

He's been in a loaner car twice due to electrical issues. He has had it a month and a half, with half of that time in a loaner.

I have never been in a loaner, nor has mine been in the shop for nothing more than an update and oil changes.

Yet, he will clearly state the Ford is a piece of crap, and the Audi is a pure joy to own - that I do not understand German car ownership (mind you, the other half only will buy a Benz). Ours Benz has had issues putting us into a loaner twice as well.

Am I really missing out on spending more money and driving loaners? Sorry, I can't seem to wrap my head around why he thinks I'm the one being ripped off here.

And yes, I could afford to buy something in that league - but why? Cars are not the best investment...
simply put, different people are after different things. If all you were after is to go A to B as cheaply and reliably as possible, then any higher end car is not for you. Other people find that it is worth spending more on a higher quality vehicle with less corners cut that are just all around nicer. Note that higher quality doesn't necessarily mean more reliable. Of course there are other people who could care less and just want the name for some sort of status as evident on the basic low model benz, bmw's etc that are considered luxury here but in the same class as common Opels and Fords and the like elsewhere in the world, along with low end lexus and infinitis and the like in the US which are still common (albeit higher model/trim) Toyotas and Nissans and the like elsewhere in the world. Anyhow back to the euros, the better ones are phenominal on the road when they work, which makes the higher maintenance and lower reliability worth the effort to some people. When they break, often you change parts and they are back 100%, unlike low end cars that could suffer from poor handeling (not a prob with the new focus), noise, excessive rattles, things of that nature that is just nature of the beast. Really does come down to different strokes for different folks. If there was an ideal car suited for everyone, there wouldn't be the large variety of different cars out there like we have.

True, I just hate the crowd that no matter what the brand, if it's a US brand than it has to be junk. I've had some real POS foreign cars that cost more than my first house.

Any car could be a lemon, just being a German car that is actually built in a third world country does not make them any better. I know that first hand.

And a lot from Mexico also. Every company started building in Mexico in the past few years. Check the VIN number :)

How long after your purchase did you get your survey?
I've been emailed 2 surveys so far, but no big "pack a lunch" surveys.

Yeap! Like the Ford Fiesta and Fusion, made in Mx, even the Toyota Tacoma is build in Tijuana, the Silverado in Silao, Guanajuato Mx and etc. Etc. Etc.

Where something built is pretty irrelevant these days IMO, except for the they took our jobs crowd. Things are so automated and dumbed down that most assembly line labor is repetitive simple tasks that don't require much skill. Really comes down to standards and the enforcement of them, which is a product of the company and not so much the location.

I think that's part of it. My '02 Taurus has a CD player in it. It turns on every time, it works every time. Because it's super simple! My watch and a basic 4 function calculator are ALSO very reliable. When you start adding things, you start adding things that could go wrong. It's a trade off. If it's something that you can't live with; save some money and go with the base radio/sync package!
